Determination of Vitamin C in tablets

I2 + C4H6O4(OH)C=COH → 2I- + 2H+ + C4H6O4C(=O)-C=O

Procedure:

1. Weigh each 5 vitamin c tablet and determine the average mass of a single tablet.

2. Grind the tablets into fine powder using a mortar and pestle.

3. Weigh approximately 0.50 grams of vitamin c powder into three different Erlenmeyer
flasks labeled as trial 1, 2, and 3. Record the corresponding weights of each trial.

4. Add about 100 mL of water in each flask just before it is about to be titrated, followed by
one dropper full of starch indicator solution. Cover the opening of the flask with plastic
or foil and shake well to dissolve the sample completely. Replace the plastic or foil with a
piece of cardboard punched to admit the tip of your burette.

5. Insert the tip of the buret through the cardboard covering the mouth of the flask and
titrate with standard iodine solution with deliberate speed until the first permanent
appearance of the blue iodo-starch color.

6. Repeat the titration (steps 4 and 5) for trials 2 and 3.

7. Calculate the percentage of Vitamin C, C6H8O6, in your sample.
