DEDICATION

Moderato = 96 ‘Ast, MARVIN C. HOWE
27It 4s hoped that this collection will be a welcome addition to the com-
paratively limited literature for horn quartet. The material was
selected for its musical value, appeal to the average audience, suit~
ability for horns, and conductveness to blend,
Successful use of horns as an independent quartet requires the employ-
ment of low register. This is normally notated in the bass clef. For
training purposes, the fourth horn part is given in both bass and
treble clef} the ledger Tines necessary below the treble clef should
serve as a strong incentive to learning the truly easier bass clef.
‘The author mies the following suggestions:
ae
a.
The group should weet REGULARLY and perform in public as
extra incentive and reward.
It 4s rather pointless to perform good music with a bad
sound. Time necessary to develope blen@, intonation, and
easy response should be spent at the outset of each rehear~
sal. The following will serve as a WARMUP:
a) Have the group start EACH tone between second line 0,and
the G one octave lower WITHOUT TONGUE, very softly, with
"Who-0-0-0-0" type head and throat resonance. Exhale
into the horn froma deep breath supply, ~ DON'T "BLOW".
‘The tone should speak very gently, - ami not in the
least abruptly-
2) Cheek intonation with major thirds and major triads, not
Just unison; check not only the slide tuning but the
tone quality and RIGHT FAKD POSITION. Bright, tense
tones are often sharp, and vice versa. The right hand
4s part of the instrument; without the hand the pitch
4s sharp; -too much hand is liable to be flat and stuffy.
Train the group to-start together WITHOUT conductor by:
a) Shutting their eyes, breathing audibly together IN
TEMPO, and attacking with tongue pronouncing "T00".
b) Have First horn raise left elbow IN TEMPO as he and the
other players inhale IN TEMPO, and bring down the elbow
IN TEMPO for the attack. This elbow motion need be only
& slight one, not distracting.
Regarding rough attacks, romenber the air stream starts
and maintains the 1ip vibration; the tongue is merely &
release valve and articulator for the air stream. The
driving energy for the air comes via diaphramtic, abdo-
minal, intercostal, ete., muscles.
