Institutions of Global Governance
The United Nations (UN)
Main Functions:
1. Maintain peace and security for all of its member-states.
The UN does not have its own military but it has
peacekeeping force which are supplied by the member
states.

On approval of the UN Security Council, these peacekeepers


are often sent to regions where armed conflict has recently
ended to discourage combatants from resuming fighting.

Other Functions:

The UN protect human rights and provide humanitarian assistance


when needed. In 1948, the General Assembly adopted the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights as standard for its human
operations.
The UN plays an integral part in social and economic
development through its UN Development Program. This is the
largest source of technical grant assistance in the world. In
addition, the World Health Organization, UN AIDS, The Global
Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, The UN
Population Fund, and the World Bank Group play an important
role in this aspect of UN as well.

The UN General Assembly

It was established in 1945 under the


UN Charter. The GA occupies a
central position as the chief
deliberative, policy making and
representative organ of the United
Nations.

It plays a significant role in the process of standard setting and the


condition of international law. The assembly meets in regular
session from September to December Each year, and thereafter as
required.

What is an International Law?

International law is a system of treaties and


agreements between nations that governs how nations
interact with other nations, citizens of other nations,
and businesses of other nations. International law
typically falls into two different categories.

"Public international law" concerns the relationships between


nations. These include standards of international behavior, the
laws of the sea, economic law, diplomatic law, environmental
law, human rights law, and humanitarian law.

International Law
Terms to Know:

Ambassador: A government official who facilitates communication


between two nations.

International Court of Justice: The judicial branch of the United Nations,


which resolves disputes between nations and issues advisory opinions on
issues of international law.

Interpol: An international network of police organizations that work


together to solve international law.

Security Council: A special committee within the United Nations that


determines whether a particular situation will create a threat to international
security.

Membership in the United Nations
Almost every fully recognized independent states are member states
in the UN. As outlined in the UN Charter, to become a member of the
UN a state must accept peace and all obligations outlined in the
Charter and willing to carry out any action to satisfy those
obligations.

THE UNSC consists of 15 members — five permanent members and


10 non-permanent members. The five permanent members are the
US, UK, Russia, China and France. Every year, five non-permanent
members are elected for a tenure of two years.

Membership in the United Nations
The current non-permanent members are Belgium, Dominican
Republic, Estonia, Germany, Indonesia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the
Grenadines, South Africa and Tunisia.
