Identify and explain the communication channels and networks used by MSU
According to Shaw. ([Link] by 928) defines a communication network as a
pattern or form that is implemented in the organisation to communicate information
effectively.
Types of Networks
Wheel Network
Chain Network
Circle Network
Star Network
Wheel Network
Under wheel network, the leader of the organisation works as a central person to
accumulate information and disseminate it to all the members. It is the most
authoritarian type of network. In the case of MSU the director can sometimes use
this type of network especially when rolling out enrolment information such as
application deadlines and semester commencement deadlines and semester
commencement dates. Kristen, R. and Sean, K. (2022) highlight that the leader of an
organisation in a wheel network must know everything about the business as to relay
accurate information to his subordinates.
Chain Network
Ziska (2014) says in a chain network individuals communicate in a set sequence.
Communication starts at the top from a CEO and works its way down to different
levels of employees. It follows a hierarchy according to the chain of command in that
organisation. An example of a chain network is the game telephone which we used
to play in our childhood. There is high risk of information distortion in this network as
people decode messages the way they want to. The most appropriate channel used
in this type of network are emails, university websites and online discussion
websites.
Star Network
According to the International Journal of computer Applications 107(2) all individuals
in this network communicate with each other freely, permanently and regularly. It
follows the informal channel of command and information flows very fast though
there may be a problem of co-ordination. Star networks reduce the chances of
miscommunication for example lecturers can use google classroom to give
assignments and announcements to students. A star network is the most adaptable
with social media channels such as Facebook, twitter, Instagram and Linked in.
These channels are used to share news, announcements and engage with the
University community. M.S.U can also use Microsoft Teams for real time
communication, collaboration and file sharing among students, faculty and staff
members.
Circle Network
It is a network that does not follow command. In a circle network information follows
in a circular form and one person can communicate simultaneously with two different
persons. Individuals can not communicate directly with each other at one given time.
M.S.U uses the Intranet which is a private network accessible only to students,
faculty and staff. It serves as a centralised platform for sharing internal resources,
policies, forms and other important information.
