And yet to do so, they managed to find a city on this continent that doesn't feel like it Quebec City really does feel more like a European destination. Mainly because everyone there speaks French, but also due to the architecture, the surprisingly steep hills (Id walk a block away for lunch and my watch would tell me, “It looks like you're working out”) the food, the culture, the need to show a passport to get there, and the number of men wearing socks with sandals. While the magicians were in town, the Canadians even imported Pope Francis, who generally seems to hang out on the other side of the Atlantic. Attending FISM and the SAM National Council Meeting immediately beforehand were great excuses to visit this city Thad always heard good things about, and I was not disappointed. The city was foreign but friendly, and 1 loved it, even though I speak very little French and understand even less. (I was often reminded of the old joke: If someone speaks two languages, they are called “bilingual.” What do you call someone who speaks just one language? ‘American.") enjoyed FISM as well. Thank you to the organizers of FISM Quebec, former SAM RVP for Canada Reneé-Claude Auclair and Pierre Harmon; thanks to their team and crew (especially Ryan Joyce, who inadvertently became my {go-to contact throughout the week); and thanks to official FISM photographers Frangois Morisset, Philippe Clavet, and Yann Brochu. And cheers to the Dj playing music between all the competition acts, filling the otherwise dead time, unobtru- sive but very often amusing in his choice of songs subtly referencing what had just happened onstage. While our feature this month is on the FISM competitions, the week was full of other activities and sessions — like any other magic convention, but ‘on steroids. More gala shows, more lectures, more big names, more inter- national stars... Even if you were there, there is no way you could have seen Preshow Alan Howard, Editor everything and everyone. It was an exhausting but fun week, although it must be admitted that, like most large events these days, there were some dis- appointments. Several scheduled per- formers and lecturers were unable to attend, had toarrive late, or had missing luggage and could not present what they intended. The paucity of vendors in the dealers’ room was a disappoint- ment, blamed partly on the difficulty and expense of getting merchandise for sale through Canadian Customs. A few acts had self.inflicted technical problems or sloppy execu- tions of their effects, Others learned that what passes for comedy in your country may not play the same way to foreigners. Some acts were just a puzzle as to how they made it onto the ‘world stage to begin with; it would've been nice if the title cards shown before each competition act were also put up again afterward, so we could again see who sponsored the act, and Known who to blame! Drawbacks aside, the many magical moments outweighed all else. is Wanele Byer on Wea7 Yes September 2022 / MUM 7 YES! Yes, we did it! The curtain opens and we see a barbershop with five puppets sitting im their chairs and a live black barber moving from one to another. Two of the figures were customers speaking to one another. There was also a mani- curist and her client, and one puppet in the center chair being worked on by the barber. The manicurist sang every once in a while and the five different char- acters — their mouths controlled by a foot pedal at the chair — were inter- acting with the barber, who was a very talented ventriloquist. He. of course, was the one person giving all five char- acters their voices. The ventriloquist ‘was named John W. Cooper and the act was known as "Fun ina Barber Shop: Cooper was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1873. At the age of thirteen he dropped out of school 10 September 2022/ MUM to work as an exercise boy at the Sheepshead Bay Racetrack, where he was introduced to a white ventriloquist who convinced him he could make his horses talk. Cooper's fascination for the art prompted him to create an act, and he began his career touring with the Southern Jubilee Singers. The next four years found him working New England, Canada, and the mid-At- lantie states, It wasn’t until 1900 that Cooper joined the Georgia Minstrels, where he became known as" he Black Napoleon of Ventriloquism.” John played in the Minstrels without the traditional blackface and in 1901 found work in ‘white” vaude-ville when a. strike by The White Rats, a union of white vaude- villians, took place. Entertainers were in demand and John The Dean’s Diary George Schindler Cooper became a fixture in vaudeville. ‘Along with his wooden partner Sam Jackson — a figure made by Theodore Mack, whoalsocraftedCharlieMcCarthy —Cooper found radio workand became aregular on athe Major Bowes Amateur Hour tour. With the decline of vaude- ville he became the lead performer in the Father Quinn Entertainers, a group of five artists, playing clubs, theaters, hospitals, children’s parties, and in the homes of wealthy patrons. During World War II, Cooper, as Hezikiah Jones and Sam, played at VA hospitals and with the USO. He appeared in New York nightclubs such as the KitKat and the El Morocco. He retired in 1960 at age 86, but prior to that time he was the ventriloquism teacher of Shari Lewis. John Walcott Cooper Jr. was the first African American ventriloquist to play the predominantly white vaudeville circuits. He died in 1966, but there are exhibits of his legacy at the Brooklyn Historical Society. Correspondence GIVINGBACK ‘Today was a perfect example of why 'm so thrilled to have my son, Grady Jacobs, be part of the magic community. At the start of the pandemic, Phil LaBush, who is a 92-year-old magician and a member of the SAM, went to live at a retirement home. Since then, the members of the Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton SAM have stayed in touch Grady Jacobs Jimmy C, Phil LaBush Fred Hayden, and Bill Byron. with Phil, Facetimed, and visited. Phil has said many times, “The magic keeps mealiv Although the Assembly meetings have returned to in-person, Phil has not been able to attend, but we knew how much he wished he could. So today, Grady and his kind and generous friends and mentors brought the magic to Phil and the residents of Springtree Rehabil- itation & Health Care Center, Grady performed a variety of tricks, made a paper hat tear for one of the residents, and did juggling. Billy Byron played piano and did entertaining tricks to music, Fred Hayden did a rope trick, Phil did an interactive trick, and Jimmy C was the emcee, keeping everyone laughing and entertained with his magic. He finished by doing the Miser’s Dream and singing "Pennies from Heaven.” At that point the residents, all from their wheelchairs, spontaneously joined in and sang with him. It was one ofthe most touching moments I've ever been a part of, Ve always reminded Grady that when he's an adult magician he should give back the way his mentors have to im. I'm so proud he was already able to give back today and am so deeply touched by these wonderful humans who are such a great representation of who magicians are. ASSEMBLY REPORTS ASSEMBLY NEWS Monthly News from the Society of American Magicians September 2022 Volume 112, Number 4 6 Baltimore, Md. Our Assembly president, Andy London, has provided top-notch virtual lectures for our group since the pandemic, On June 29, magician and creator Adam Wilber gave an eighty-minute presentation of his creative magic and props. He provided an overview of his company (vul- pinecreations.com) and how to create the effects featured. The Splits Project is his newest illusion and, with a simple do-it-yourself kit, one can make business cards, $20 dollarbills, or even a Red Bull can split into two. Adam shared a recent addition to Splits with a $1 bill miraculously turning into several $100 dollar bills. Assembly leader Jeff Eline was able to create one immediately after the lecture with realistic play money available at The Magic Warehouse. Adam provided all the necessary instructions to obtaining the correct magnets and options to purchase Splits effect tricks for those who are not adept with the DIY require- ‘ments, During the Zoom lecture, he led a discussion for the best roughing spray plus other tips for one having their own creator's kit. ‘Adam Wilber's repertoire includes many original effects that he was kind enough to reveal to our group. Included were: What, Where, When, & Why; playing card in wallet; a version of McDonald's Aces he named after his daughter; and a make-ityour- self version of Tommy Wonder’s Ring, Wallet, & Watch, 12 September 2022 / MUM ‘The encore of the lecture was Wilber’sversionofthe Cups &Ballsusing coffee mugs and beans. The July meeting for the Bob Miller Assembly 18 was held on July 26, 2022. ‘We had four members and three guests: Levi and Lucy (members of the Tampa IBM Tampa Ring) and Jim (Frank's friend; Frank cannot drive at night so Jim helps out). Other members in atten- dance were Bill Cornelius (on Zoom), Frank DeAugustine, Mike Mykita, Mark Tierno, and Mark Zajicek (Zoom from the FISM convention in Canada). ‘A very short business meeting followed with discussion of the SAM 18 bank account mix-up again and thoughts to fix it, Michael went to last month's 1BM meeting and stated that the same people who were in atten- dance on the meeting night were almost the same people here tonight, so joining the two clubs did not seem feasible as far as increasing attendance. Since we do have the combined banquet and picnic together it did not make sense to make one club give up its autonomy and join the other. The performance part of the evening: Frank brought along some ropes because Lucy had expressed an interest in learning some rope magic at the last meeting. Frank was going to teach the almost self:working Profes- sor's Nightmare, but screwed it all up and suggested Lucy look it up on the Internet and preform it at next months meeting. Michael again saved the day for Frank by teaching us all how to tie a knot in a rope holding it by both hands and not letting go of either end. Levi was up next showing flourishes, fancy card moves, and performing The Three Piles from The Royal Road to Gard Magic. Since he was not a member of the SAM and was interested in M-U-M magazine he went to a used bookstore and bought a whole stack of back dated issues. He announced that he had just applied to the SAM and would be a member by next meeting. Michael did a few mentalism tricks that were invented by Max Maven, and explained the magic cube and a couple of ways to present it Since Frank screwed up earlier he did not preform but promises to do something again next month, even if it iswrong. A brief discussion period followed until we remembered that the room was only good until 10:00 p.m., then we all went are merry ways. — Frank DeAugustine 19 Houston, Texas After a couple of months with no meetings, we are back to live meetings in Houston. This month we had lots of great magic and camaraderie. ‘Tommy Bradley began the evening of magic with a puzzle he had purchased at Cracker Barrel. While not strictly ; Tommy shared his approach to solving problems by looking at them from different angles and bringing his point out nicely. Tommy has a great way of dealing with problems of most any kind. Greg Conner showed us four blocks with numbers all around and asked members to pick and choose the ones they wanted. These blocks were placed into a base, then Greg revealed that the chosen numbers matched those already set up in the base itself. Harry Mauer shared an alternative toa breather crimp, a card locator tool using a drop of special glue and a UV light. Ron Jernigan used audience-se- lected numbers on a Magic Square and some mathematics as he discerned the missing value from a calculated total. Next, Ron shared a routine he called Danny's Paddler, revolving around a fancy shot glass and a miniature checkerboard. In line with the story, a half a penny was created under the shot glass in a most mysterious manner. Mike Kaminski shared a very nice ‘one-coin routine, which seemed to turn into a two-coin routine, then back to one again. His storyline revolved around a prison, and I thought it was rather clever. Some nice coin work here. Ben Jackson shared a Professor's Nightmare routine coupled with a Ring & Rope routine. Ben interwove the two together in a magical mystery before our very eyes. It was a great routine S.A.M. ASSEMBLY REPORTS © with that special blend of magic and humor that Ben is known for. Jamie Salinas shared his take on the Mastermind deck with Kim Lampkin’s help, as any card is chosen from a deck, matching a previously held card. Edgar Aquino performed a pene- tration type routine, having one card penetrate through two others. Well done! Shane Wilson borrowed a ring that ended up penetrating through his closed fist and handkerchief. Great! Jeff Lanes ended our performances with a randomly called person calling out the name of a card that had been named by member Harry Mauer. We all had a great time. Our next meetingiisin October, as September will be time for the TAOM in Fort Worth. —Miles Root 21 Hartiord, Conn. ‘The weather was perfect forhot dogs and burgers at Dan Sclare’s patio this month. We all chatted about diverse subjects — past shows, upcoming gigs, favorite effects, etc. Dan had lots of ‘magic books and props from David Mar- golin’s estate and he took offers from the group. Jon Cap did an odd trick with a card. He took a hole-puncher and punched a hole in each corner of the card. He then, Matrix-like, moved all four holes, one at a time, to one corner. It was an impres- sive trick, but the rest of us could not resist offering suggestions on how to make it even better. Bob Hale showed us a collection of postcards from his German uncle, circa 1920. He also had tickets from various events in Europe and Asia. Bob had Jon look at one ticket somewhere in the pile, He took outa notebook that had a 4 x 4 grid on it. Someone thought of a number (two-digit, fairly high) and called it out. Bob waved his hand over the grid and it was suddenly full of numbers. Attached was a metal plate that had Jon's destination engraved on it. He also showed us something I had not seen in decades: a small box witha slot. He inserted a bracelet in the slot and locked it in place with a hatpin in a hole that ran cross-wise to the slot. Thus he was able to lift the box with the bracelet. Someone held out his hand and Bob placed the box on it. With a magical flourish, the bracelet was lifted clear of the box. —Dana T. Ring 22 Los Angeles, Cali. The July 18, 2022 meeting of the Southern California Assembly 22 was an evening of stage and parlor magic ‘competition. Originally scheduled for the stage at Packard Hall in Westmin- ster Gardens, we were relegated back to Zoom because of a new surge in COVID cases closing Packard Hall for our use. Opening the show was Debbie Sens with a nice Chop Cup-type routine that also used a shot glass and a small silk to make the ball vanish, appear, and change places. She concluded with a nicely performed, multi-effect four Aces / four Kings card routine. Next up was Kelly Hernandez performing a Cut & Restored Rope routine that included multiple cuts and multiple restorations. ‘The third presenter was Bill Perron, always with something unique and ‘unusual to show. Bill always performs in costume and character and tonight it was “Pero (the psychic dog) and Perron.” Pero was first levitated on a Super-X levitation and then predicted ‘a card selected from a jumbo deck and reversed that card in the deck, As the emcee, John Engman did some Gene Anderson paper-tearing effects and presented a line of jokes between acts. The fourth performer was Johnny Mora displaying a deck of cards with names instead of playing card faces. With the card/name Tom Cruise selected, Johnny opened a freshly delivered FedEx package that contained a Tom Cruise photo and a Top Gun flight jacket. Ernest Layva was next with a selected card-in-bal- loon effect. Under the guise of explain- ing how the trick was just done, Ernest displayed a clear and empty inflated balloon when a card held in his hand seemed to penetrate the inflated balloon and ended up inside. Closing the show was our newly inducted compeer Mike Terrazino. Mike, creating a performance stage for ‘Zoom, presented a very nice manipula- tion act to music. With a large silk, he presented a knot tying/untying routine and a silk and cane penetration effect before closing with a series of card fan productions and flourishes. On Thursday, July 28, Assembly #49 held its monthly meeting. After a chat about the SAM's National Council gathering and the FISM convention — both held in Quebec, Canada — and the upcoming magic activities in Florida, the meat of the meeting took place. The themes were: "Change Bags, “Children’s Magic,” “Cards,” “Bottles,” “Light Blubs,” and the introduction of September 2022/ MUM 17 © S.A.M. ASSEMBLY REPORTS a new theme by President Billy Byron called “The Hardware of Magic.” ‘The latter involves a member dis- cussing and demonstrating something they have created and/or built that enhances an effect or its presentation. Bill discussed that he now incorporates the use of two large decorative giftbags in his stage shows. The bags are filled with his magic stuff and was purchased from a Dollar Store (now the $1.25 store). The bags use do not have “Happy Birthday,” “Happy Anniversary,” or "Get Well Soon” printed on them. They are the simple, beautifully designed, and colorful. ‘The problem with a bag (any paper bag) is that it collapses on you without some kind of support. Here is where the "Hardware" comes in. Bill showed how he uses form board, small wooden beads, brass fasteners, and some Scotch tape to build a support that makes the bags stand up straight and rigid. The support is designed to be lightweight and to use no pliers or screwdrivers. They can be broken down flat for transport and storage. Bill also performed a four-Ace rev- elation wherein all 52 cards ended up with the suits and cards in numerical order, There is no deck switch involved. He said it took him three days to figure itout. Gary Rock performed two classic effects in magic: Hippity Hop Rabbits and Strat-O-Spheres. He enhanced the design of his Strat-O-Spheres using what can be called a "Hardware of Magic’ idea. With his modifications a smooth- ness to the presentation was achieved. Grady Jacobs performed another classic in magic: the Color Changing Silks, using a Change Bag — which is still one of the great magic props. Michael Easler performed a version ofa children’s classic wherein pictures of ten children (five boys, five girls) magically change places after a mishap. Michael's patter went along perfectly with his props. By the way, he spent months building and painting his own props because the ones that came with the trick looked too “cheap” to him. 18 September 2022 / MUM Building and painting props is another example of the “Hardware of Magic.” — Billy Byron 51 Peoria, Il. ‘The July meeting was mostly business related to the Heart of Illinois Fair; last minute details to make sure everyone had their gate and parking passes.
