1. What does MELC stand for? Why did DepEd come up with it? 2. What are alternatives to
face-to-face curriculum delivery mode?
MELC stands for Most Essential Learning Competencies. MELCs serves as a guide in
the curriculum and instruction in all public schools. It was developed by Deped in response to
the changing educational landscape brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The MELCs enable the Department to focus instruction on the most essential and
indispensable competencies that our learners must acquire, as we anticipate challenges in
learning delivery. The goal of MELCs is to ensure that students acquire the necessary
competencies and skills that are essential for their future success. MELCs assist educators in
designing and delivering effective learning experiences that align with the needs and goals of the
curriculum.
There are alternatives for face-to-face curriculum delivery mode which are Distance
Learnning, Modular – Distance learning and Online Distance learning
Distance learning, is a type of education in which teachers and students are physically
separated during instruction and various technologies are used to allow student-student contact.
Modular Distance Learning is the use of Modules made by teachers with different tasks
and learning activities based from the essential learning competencies.
Online distance learning is an educational process where students receive instruction
through online classes, video recordings, video conferencing, or any other audio/visual
technology medium. It enables people to receive education without having to be physically
present in a classroom .

Do we need to have a crisis to think of decongesting curriculum for greater focus on the
most essential? Should this happen only in times of crisis like COVID?
It is not necessary to have a crisis to think about decongesting curriculum and focusing
on the most essential elements. While crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic may highlight the
need for streamlined curriculum and prioritize essential topics, the idea of ensuring students
receive a well-rounded education is crucial at all times.
Education systems should regularly evaluate and refine their curricula to ensure they are
providing the most relevant and essential knowledge and skills to students. This process should
involve ongoing discussions with educators, policymakers, and stakeholders to identify key areas
of focus and eliminate redundant or outdated content. Implementing this approach continuously
can mitigate the need for crisis-driven interventions.
While crises provide an opportunity for reflection and renewal, the decongestion of
curriculum and focus on essentials should be an ongoing consideration rather than a reactionary
measure to crises alone.
For me here is no single "best" flexible learning option that applies to all students and
educational contexts. The effectiveness of a flexible learning option depends on various factors,
including the specific educational goals, the needs and preferences of students, available
resources, and the learning environment.
Flexible learning can take many forms and each has its advantages and disadvantages,
and what works well for one student or educational context may not work as effectively for
another.

Activity 2: Planning for the Future as a Teacher During the Pandemic 1. When you become a
teacher in the future which teaching delivery will you use during a pandemic? Why?
Blended learning minimizes the risk of virus transmission by reducing the density of
students in a physical classroom. It ensures that social distancing measures are followed by
allowing only a portion of students to attend in-person, while others engage remotely.
Remote learning enables access to education for students who may face barriers in
attending school physically, such as those with health conditions or living in remote areas.
Blended learning ensures that every student has the opportunity to participate and learn,
regardless of their circumstances.
