2. (15 points)

a. Compute the standard enthalpy of formation of acetylene(C2H2) from its elements:

2C(graphite) + H2(g) C2H2(g)

The equation for each step and the corresponding enthalpy changes are:

i. C (graphite) + O2 CO2 (g) H°rxn = -393.5 kJ/mol

ii. H2(g) + 1/2O2(g) H2O (l) H°rxn = -285.8 kJ/mol

iii. 2C2H2 (g) + 5O2(g) 4CO2 (g) + 2H2O (l) H°rxn =- 2598.8 kJ/mol

(4 points)

b. A weight of 266 g white phosphorus (P4) burns in air according to the equation:

P4(s) + O2(g) P4O10(g) H = -3013 kJ/mol

i. Write the balance equation involved.

(1 point)

ii. Calculate the heat evolved during the combustion.

(4 points)

c. In a dry cell battery, the anode of the cell consists of zinc (Zn) can that is in contact
with manganese dioxide (MnO2) and an electrolyte. The electrolyte consists of
ammonium chloride and zinc chloride. While, carbon rod serves as the cathode,
which immersed in the electrolyte in the center of the cell. The cell reactions are:

Anode: Zn(s) → Zn2+ (aq) + 2e¯

Cathode: 2NH4+ (aq) + 2MnO2(s) + 2e¯ → Mn2O3(s) + 2NH3(aq) + H2O(l)
