 INTRODUCTION ON CYBER CRIME
• Cybercrime is a crime that includes a computer and a network . The computer
may have been used in the execution of a crime or it may be the target . It is a
dangerous attack a company or an individual may face . There are many cases
where the cyber attack has brought massive loss to the company and individuals
due to the data hack . We live in technology-driven era , and every piece of
information is now fed on computers . Cybercrime involves an attack on computers
and digital devices . These cyber-attacks can prove hazardous not just for the
organization , but also for the nation . There are many digital attack cases in
India and global , pushing for more security measures . These attacks also
affecting the economy of the country if not controlled in the initial stage .
 WHAT IS CYBER CRIME ?
• Cybercrime is defined as the systematic criminal activity
occurring digitally and done by hackers . Some examples
of cybercrime are fraud , malware viruses in computers ,
cyberstalking , cyber-blackmailing etc.
• Due to these , government agencies and companies are
investing more in the hiring cybercrime experts to avoid it
. Earlier, cybercrime was committed only by individuals or
by small groups but now a highly complex cybercriminals
network work on attacking the system for data collection.
GROUPS OF CYBER CRIME
There are 3 groups of cyber crime –
• Individual : This is the form of cyberstalking, trafficking, and spamming on an individual.
Over the years , this type of cybercrime has been taken seriously by law enforcement
agencies . It is now keeping a track over every such attack on an individual .

• Property : Criminals steal the property in the cyber world , attackers steal data . The
attacker steals a person's bank details and misuse the credit card for online purchases by
using malicious software , the attacker attacks the property to disrupt the system of the
organization .

• Government : These types of crimes are denoted as cyber terrorism . This can be a terror
because the attacker can get hold on essential documents related to government projects . An
enemy nation or terrorist usually makes such attacks . There are many cases globally where a
terrorist hacks government data .
TYPES OF CYBER CRIME
HACKING The computer system of the person is hacked to get personal
information . In many countries , including India , hacking is a punishable act . It
is quite different from ethical hacking . In normal hacking , involves illegal use
different types of software to enter the system of the target person . Hacker is
then able to monitor every activity done by the person . It is done on a large
scale , Companies heir cybercrime experts to avoid Hacking .
CYBERTHEFT This Cybercrime is about violating copyright and downloading
music or movies . In India , many movies before their releases are leaked on the
movie downloading sites . In other words , theft is also called privacy , which
can bring a huge loss to artists and creators .
CYBER STALKING It is online harassment by an individual or a group of
people . Normally , these stalkers target an individual and harass online . There
are many cases of cyberstalking in India , resulting in the target person ending
up taking self-life or suicide .

MALICIOUS SOFTWARE These are computer-based cybercrimes where

virus-based software is installed in the targeted people or organization
computers . This is to damage the system and corrupt the data of the target .
Resulting , to corruption of data . To avoid this , people use anti-virus software .
MEASURES TO AVOID CYBER CRIME
CYBER SECURITY
• Keep software and operating system updated .
• Use anti-virus software to avoid Malicious software .
• Use strong passwords .
• Never open attachments in spam emails .
• Never give personal details until it’s secure .
• Never accept app cookies .
• Keep an eye on Bank statements .
• Be aware of which website URLs you are visiting.

 CASES OF CYBERCRIME 📊
COSMOS BANK CYBER ATTACK
Cosmos bank cyber attack in pune , India occurred in August 2018 and is one of the most notable instance
of cybercrime . This attack causes severe impact on bank and its customers also .

• They targeted bank’s head quarters in pune .

• They use malware type of attack combination of sophisticated malware attack and fraudulent
transactions .
• They use malware to execute a large number of unauthorized transactions .
• Cybercriminals use malware , including keyloggers and desktop services .
• They transfer millions of amount of money to foreign bank accounts results in a loss of INR 94 Crore
rupees .

• Investigation and Recovery of incident prompted investigation by Law enforcement agencies , pune
police and FBI in U.S. .

• This gives the importance of cybersecurity and protocols .

THE MELISSA VIRUS
The Melissa virus , also known as “Mailissa” is one of the most famous and most
disruptive computer virus in the history of cybercrime . It was a mass mailing
macro virus that targeted Microsoft Word documents and e-mail systems .
• It was discovered in March 1999, By David L.smith .
• It spread through Microsoft Word documents attached to Email messages .
• It works when recipient open infected document , the virus would execute and replicate by
sending infected email attachments to first 50 contacts .
• If it one’s activated , the virus would infect user‘s computer and allow it to send infected emails
to spread further .
• The impact of this virus is it causes emails system to slow down and overload email servers
and disrupt many email server of organizations.
• Smith was arrested and sentenced to 20 months in prison and fined $5,000 .
