The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) is a comprehensive initiative aimed at encouraging conservation

and responsible forest management. SFI was founded by a group of scientists, conservationists, and
forestry specialists and combines sustainable tree harvesting with the protection of plant life, wildlife,
soil, and water quality.

Fundamentally, the goal of SFI is to balance social, economic, and environmental interests in forestry
practices. Standards, conservation, community involvement, and educational programs are its four main
pillars of operation. Although its main focus is on North America, SFI works with partners all around the
world to promote sustainable forestry practices.

SFI has been a driving force behind sustainable forestry practices for almost thirty years, having been
founded in 1994 under the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA). Through strategic agreements
and collaborations, SFI expands its global reach while maintaining a primary focus on North America.

SFI has competition in its industry from other forest certification programs such as the Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC), which may use different standards and methodologies but have similar goals.
All things considered, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative is essential to promoting sustainability via
teamwork, which benefits the environment and communities alike.
