Identify + Define Your Photography Business Brand

Starting a business is a pretty daunting task. I mean, where do you even begin? What I've learned over
the years as a professional photographer is that the best thing you can do is to create a strong foundation
that will help you implement business ideas and decisions now and in the future. Having a strong
foundation means identifying and defining your business from the very beginning. This worksheet is
meant to guide you through this process but is something I'd recommend you visit from to time so that
the decisions you make align with your brand identity.
1. Define your business. What service are you offering? What type of photography?
example: Light and airy wedding and engagement photographer focusing on the candid in-between
moments between lovers.

2. Describe your aesthetic:

3. What will your work be known for?

4. Choose 3-5 words that describe your aesthetics:

example: minimalist, airy, moody, elegant, classic, dark, depth, intricate, bright, etc.

5. Choose 3-5 words that describe your quality or service:

example: guidance, fun, exciting, emotional, grounded, honest, comedic, etc.

6. If you could describe your brand in colors, what would they be?

7. Who is your ideal client? Be very specific. Here are some questions to consider: What is their age
range, where do they live, male or female, what is their annual income, what do they value, what are
they passionate about, where do they shop, etc.

Okay, here's what we did here:

By identifying and defining your business, you are creating a very specific brand catered to very specific
people. It helps you identify your ideal clients and who, when, and how you should be targeting them.
You'll be able to get clarity on how to name your business, write your website copy, social media posts,
advertising/marketing, logos, watermarks, and e-mails. Be sure to keep this document and revisit it
often. I would even recommend gluing it into your planner or organizer to reference every month.
