Sandman (First Half) Synopsis

The Sandman is an engaging and philosophical story about a god, Morpheus, who gets
captured by a group of petty magic users who originally aimed to capture Death, but failed. They
decided to exploit their summoning of the god of dreams and took all his belongings and locked
him up for 106 years which had caused a sleeping sickness epidemic, before he eventually
escaped from their clutches and prison. Sandman then went on a journey to restore his realm of
dreams by collecting his power once again.

He encounters people who think of themselves as above him, or those that were
corrupted by his power when he went to acquire back his lost possessions; among these was
someone named Dee who had escaped from Arkham Asylum and used a gem that contained a
large amount of Morpheus’s powers and was used to harm people for his own pleasure.

Throughout his time spent gaining back his items of power, the story explores themes of
pain and conflict as well as broken relationships between friends and families with both the main
characters and the villains, but most importantly; it highlights the struggle for internal and
external freedom.

Several other media share this theme, but also some differences. One Piece by Eiichiro
Oda is an example of a media that shares the theme of freedom, but it more importantly
explores the definitions and sides of justice and crime from multiple viewpoints. They both also
share ideas of racism, liberty, and both have an element of mystery tied to the past that is
further explored throughout the story. Of course, they both share many differences in terms of
structure, length, and the overall story as One Piece is about pirates going against the the Navy
to find a grand treasure that has been an ongoing graphic novel since 1997, and The Sandman
has had published books from 1988 until 1996 that follows the journey of a god rebuilding his
realm.
