Resumen

The story tells the life of Mathilde Loisel, a beautiful and charming woman born into a humble
family. Despite her longing for luxury and elegance, she marries a modest clerk from the
Ministry of Education. One day, her husband secures an invitation to an elegant party for her,
but instead of being excited, she feels miserable due to her lack of jewels and luxurious dresses.
With the help of a friend, Mathilde borrows a diamond necklace for the party and becomes the
sensation of the night. However, upon returning home, she discovers that she has lost the
necklace. To replace it, the couple goes into debt for years, working hard and sacrificing all
luxuries until they finally pay off the debt. Ten years later, Mathilde learns that the lost necklace
was a cheap imitation worth no more than five hundred francs. The story reflects on the fickle
nature of life and the weight of appearances.
