COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is an introduction to the philosophy of law. We will attempt to understand law
and legal practice by exploring the relationship between law and morality and the
relationship between adjudication and reasoning. We will also consider criticisms of this
approach by feminist jurisprudence, critical race theory and legal pluralism.
Students may vary in their competency levels on these outcomes. They can expect to achieve
these outcomes if they honour course policies, attend classes regularly, complete all assigned
work in good faith and on time, and meet all other course expectations of them as students.
ANTIREQUISITE(S)
None. Students wishing to audit the course should consult with the instructor prior to or
during the first week of classes.
PREREQUISITE(S)
None.
Lectures will be integrated with reading materials, legal cases, visual presentations, and
group discussions.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Webinars, PowerPoint lecture slides and notes, lists of readings, in-class activities,
assignment guidelines, and other components of the course materials are typically the
intellectual property of the instructor. Unauthorized reproduction through audio-recording,
video-recording, photographing, sharing on social media, or posting on course-sharing
websites is an infringement of copyright and is prohibited. Such action may be considered a
Code of Conduct violation and lead to sanctions.
ASSIGNMENT AUTHORIING
Students are required to submit work that is genuinely their own ideas and expressions.
Using sources to represent an idea or expression as one’s own, such as generative AI
(including, but not limited to ChatGPT or Google Translate), will be considered
plagiarism, a scholastic offence subject to the penalties outlined in the academic calendar.
All assignments must be authored from an original document using a Microsoft Word
account registered to the student. Microsoft Word is available free to all students by visiting
myoffice.uwo.ca. Documents submitted with registrations affiliated to anyone other than the
student may be taken as evidence of collaboration or plagiarism. Only Microsoft Word
documents will be acceptable upload submissions (i.e. do not submit pdf documents). If a
student is required to resubmit due to improper document formatting, late penalties will be
calculated from the time the properly formatted document is submitted.
EVALUATION
Class Attendance
A 10% grade will be awarded on the basis of classroom attendance. In addition, students
will be expected to discuss assigned readings and cases.
Essays
You must work directly and substantially from the authors’ writings as these writings are
presented in the required course material (as opposed to, for example, working primarily
from lecture slides and/or other sources) and will be graded accordingly (see “Demonstrated
Authenticity” in the marking criteria below).
Assistance: I am available to answer any questions you may have. If English is your second
language or you have difficulty writing essays, I strongly recommend using the excellent
services offered through the Writing Support Centre.
Format:
Word document due at the beginning of class.
Title page with name, student number and essay title.
12-point, times new roman font.
Standard margins, footer, and header with page numbers on the top right-hand corner.
Lines are to be double-spaced, without an extra line-space between paragraphs.
No section headings.
Bibliography listing all sources used to write the essay.
MLA style for in-text citation and bibliography (see Writing Philosophy: A Guide to
Canadian Students, Appendix B).
Total length: 5 pages (excluding title page and bibliography).
Marking Criteria:
Demonstrated Authenticity: Does the author make direct and substantial use of the
philosophers’ writings as these writings are presented in the required course material? Does
the author judiciously incorporate relevant and significant quotations with genuine citations
in the specified format? [10 marks]
Understanding: How well does the author understand the relevant lectures and required
course material? How well does she understand the complexity of the issues involved? [10
marks]
Argument: Does the paper answer the question asked? Does the author offer objective and
independent reasons and use cogent inferences to support her answer? Do the claims made
in different parts of the paper follow from one another and are they consistent? [10 marks]
Clarity: Is the author’s position clear with an explicitly articulated thesis? Is the paper
clearly written overall? Could another student at the same level who is not enrolled in the
course understand the paper? [10 marks]
Organization: Does the author reveal a plan for the paper at the outset and does she follow
that plan? Are the paragraphs adequate and appropriate, and are they properly structured? [5
marks]
Style: Does the author use correct grammar and syntax? Have the guidelines for format been
followed? [5 marks; note that significant departures from the required format can result in
penalties that reduce this mark below 0].
Final Exam
The format will be short answer and essay. Further details will be provided to the class
later in the term.
ACADEMIC ACCOMMODATION
For course components worth 10% or more of the total course grade, please see the
Academic Policies and Regulations section at the end of this course outline or consult the
Academic Calendar.
For course components worth less than 10% of the total course grade, an academic
accommodation will still be required. Supporting documentation should be submitted to your

Huron recognizes that a culture change regarding gender-based sexual violence requires
ongoing commitment from the entire community. It takes time, persistence, and active
engagement from everyone to achieve our goal. Huron remains committed to working to
end gender-based and sexual violence on our campus and within our larger Western
community.
1) A student may be debarred from writing the final examination for failure to
maintain satisfactory academic standing throughout the year.
2) Any student who, in the opinion of the instructor, is absent too frequently from
class or laboratory periods in any course will be reported to the Dean of the Faculty
offering the course (after due warning has been given). On the recommendation of
the Department concerned, and with the permission of the Dean of that Faculty, the
student will be debarred from taking the regular examination in the course. The
Dean of the Faculty offering the course will communicate that decision to the Dean
of the Faculty of registration.
All students pursuing academic consideration, regardless of type, must contact their
instructors no less than 24 hours following the end of the period of absence to clarify how
they will be expected to fulfill the academic responsibilities missed during their absence.
Students are reminded that they should consider carefully the implications of
postponing tests or midterm exams or delaying submission of work, and are
encouraged to make appropriate decisions based on their specific circumstances.
Students who have conditions for which academic accommodation is appropriate, such as
disabilities or ongoing or chronic health conditions, should work with Accessible
Education Services to determine appropriate forms of accommodation. Further details

Policy on Academic Consideration for a Medical/ Non-Medical Absence
(a) Consideration on Medical Grounds for assignments worth less than 10%
of final grade: Consult Instructor Directly and Contact Academic
Advising
When seeking consideration on medical grounds for assignments worth less than 10% of
the final course grade, the student should contact the instructor directly. The student need
only share broad outlines of the medical situation. The instructor may require the student
to submit documentation to the academic advisors, in which case she or he will advise the
student and inform the academic advisors to expect documentation. If documentation is
requested, the student will need to complete and submit the Student Medical Certificate.
The instructor may not collect medical documentation. The advisors will contact the
instructor when the medical documentation is received, and will outline the severity and
duration of the medical challenge as expressed on the Student Medical Certificate and in
any other supporting documentation. The student will be informed that the instructor has
been notified of the presence of medical documentation, and will be instructed to work as
quickly as possible with the instructor on an agreement for accommodation.
The documentation is submitted in confidence and will not be shown to instructors. The
advisors will contact the instructor when the medical documentation is received, and will
outline the severity and duration of the medical challenge as expressed on the Student
Medical Certificate and in any other supporting documentation. The student will be
informed that the instructor has been notified of the presence of medical documentation,
and will be instructed to work as quickly as possible with the instructor on an agreement
for accommodation. The instructor will not normally deny accommodation where
appropriate medical documentation is in place and where the duration it describes aligns
with the due date(s) of assignment(s). Before denying a request for accommodation on
medical grounds, the instructor will consult with the Dean. The instructor’s decision is
appealable to the Dean.
