y iz) | | 4) rd The University of Papua New Guinea Course Offering Continuing Students OVERVIEW - BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE REQUIREMENTS In accordance with the By-Laws governing Bachelor of Arts degree, candidates admitted to the degree sould satisfy the following requirements to qualify forthe award of the degree: To complete 32 courses — equivalent to a total of 96 credit points in four (4) years of fulltime study or eight (8) years of part time study, of which there shall be: 1. A major sequence of courses as major area of study with 45 ~ 48 credit points ‘Major Sequence: 45 ~ 48 Points 2. Aminor sequence of courses as minor area of study with 24 ~ 30 credit points ‘Minor Sequence: 24 - 30 Points 3, Four Compulsory Enrichment courses (12 points) plus three Broadening courses (9 points), which should add up to Enrichment Courses: 21 Points Note: Enrichment courses comprise of compulsory and broadening courses. Compulsory ‘courses are courses that MUST be taken by all students. These courses include; © Communication and tife Skills (CLS) ‘© Computer literacy and Numeracy (CLN) © Givies and Ethics © Communication Skils for SHSS Broadening courses are courses from other schools that compliment your major or minor sequence. This include any three courses outside of your major and minor sequence, 14. Other courses taken outside the major and minor area of study will lso be counted towards the overall points to make up the 96 points. 5, There should be an overall of at least 3 CPs during the course of your four (4) years study, and at least one CP in the ‘major. However, those with more than 3, willbe disqualified from being awarded the degree. 6. An overall or cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 is required to be eligible for graduation. N.B: Generally, a candidate on fulltime study should score at least 24 Credit Points at the end of each academic year. Credit points for courses, which have been completed successfully (with a passing), should be awarded the grade. ‘There are some minor variations amongst disciplines in the major requirements (1) above. Module two covers its on: Mines procedures, seminar presentations, offal eters, metorandum, negoision, and dealing with confit. 82 ANTHROPOLOGY, SOCIOLOGY & ARCHAEOLOGY COURSES Semester 1 4.14001 - STUDY OF HUMAN SOCIETY This course provides an introduction to the disciplines of anthropology, sociology and archaeology and covers a broad range of social grouping, relevant concepts and theories. Divided into three main themes, the course covers classical theories and key concepts of society, introducing the three disciplines. The course also provides a general introduction to world cultures and kinship systems. The thematic sequence in the course corresponds to courses offered by the strand in subsequent semesters. This course is. «basic prerequisite forall courses taken in the Anthropology and Sociology strand, Semester 2 4.14002 - MODERN PNG SOCIETY Modern PNG Society intends to introduce students to some of the exciting theoretical and conceptual tools sociologists use to understand and appreciate the evolution and dynamics of human societies. The approach will be holistic in that the major societal structures and aspects of society will be identified and subsequently dissected using basic theory and conceptual tools available in society, The dissection will be critically executed which is anticipated to provide students with the opportunity to analyze the evolving PNG society using real life (empirical) experiences and situations that are familiar to them so as to appreciate those dynamics. ‘ 83 CREATIVE ARTS ARTS & DESIGN COURSES Semester 1 4.16001 ~ FUNDAMENTALS OF ART & DESIGN ‘This course introduces students to the rudiments of design, the principles and practices of 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional spatial dynamics, exploration oftheir relevance to organizational space and investigations of their structural properties in a range of media. Theory and practice, focusing on color and design studies, and application of the elements and principles of design and a range of activities structured from simple to complex design problem are covered in the course. 4.16002 - SEEING & DRAWING ‘This course is designed to bring out the latent creative and perceptive ability of the students’ right brain hemisphere. The course Jeads the student to “see”, inthe atsts’ mode of seeing necessary for future artistic development. Using he surrounding environment as the sources fr subject matter, the specifically designed series of exercises and sketchbook assignments bring the student rapidly into accurate drawing from life. New concepts of observation are introduced which complement and extend those gained in the previous courses. Studio practices linked with personal sketchbook assignments form the basic structure of the course. Drawing primarily ftom the figure, experimental drawing techniques will be introduced and explored. ‘THEATRE ARTS COURSES Semester 1 4.17101 ~ INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE ARTS ‘This course aims to provide students with the historical development of Theatre from Eaypt to Greek, Roman to Medieval, Dark Ages to Restoration, Renaissance to Modem and Contemporary practice. The course provides background to expose students to the discipline of Theatre Ars borne out of human experiences.
