Selecting the Right Footwear

A QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE

A quick guide illustrating key performance features to consider
when selecting the right safety boot for the job site.

Not every safety boot provides

the same level of protection.
Be sure to consider environmental hazards,
applicational risks and ASTM approved
standards and testing methods put into
place to promote worker safety on the job.

Identify Necessary
SAFETY
FEATURES
For most construction companies, it is critical to assess and
identify the optimal level of foot protection necessary to best
close the gap between protection, performance and value.
OSHA has identified 4 common work-related foot injuries
along with key causes for each:

CRUSHED OR BROKEN FEET/TOES

> FALLING OBJECTS
> MOVING VEHICLES

> FEET CAUGHT OR TRAPPED

IN BETWEEN OBJECTS
> CONVEYOR BELTS

PUNCTURES TO THE SOLE

OF THE FOOT
> LOOSE NAILS
> SHARP METAL

> GLASS

> HARMFUL DEBRIS

BURNS & DERMATITIS

> CHEMICAL SPLASHES
> WET CONCRETE

> LIQUID

SPRAINS & STRAINS

> UNEVEN TERRAIN
> POOR TRACTION

> POOR ERGONOMICS

ASTM F2413-18
Standard specification for
performance requirements for
protective (safety) toe cap footwear

TESTING VERIFICATION
ASTM F2413-18a: Standard test
methods for foot protection
> Section 5.2 Impact Resistance:
Toe area must provide a minimum interior
height clearance of 0.5 inches when
subjected to 75 pounds of force

> Section 5.3 Compression Resistance:

Toe area must provide a minimum interior
height clearance of 0.5 inches when
subjected to 2,500 pounds of force

ASTM F2413-18
Boss Footwear Markings
®

> LINE 1: FULL SAFETY

indicates the style of Boss® boot
in accordance to the ASTM
F2413-18 standard. Boss®
footwear is also offered in
"STEEL TOE" for impact (I)
and compression (C) resistance
for worker's toes.

> LINE 2: ASTM F2413-18

indicates that the protective
footwear meets the performance
requirements of ASTM F2413-18
which means the protective toe
cap is an integral and permanent
part of the footwear

> LINE 3: M/I/C

identifies the gender (M [Male] or
F [Female]) for which the footwear
is intended, impact resistance (I)
and compression resistance (C) in
accordance to sections 5.2 and 5.3
of the ASTM F2413-18 standard

> LINE 4: Identifies additional

specific types of hazards that
the footwear protects from in
accordance with the ASTM
2413 standard
See additional protective
property chart below.
*Boss® footwear may not feature a line 4
if no additional protective properties are met in
the chart below.

ADDITIONAL PROTECTIVE
PROPERTY GUIDE
Puncture Resistance
Reduce the possibility of injury caused by sharp objects that
can penetrate the bottom of the footwear.

Metatarsal Protection
Reduces the chance of injury to the metatarsal bones on the
top of the foot.

Conductive Properties
Provides protection for the wearer against hazards that may
result from static electricity buildup and to help reduce the
possibility of ignition of explosives or volatile chemicals.

Electrical Hazard Resistance Properties

Intended to provide a secondary source of
electric-shock-resistance protection to the wearer against the
hazards from an incidental contact with live electrical circuits or
electrically energized conductors, parts or apparatus.
*Boots must be capable of withstanding the application of 18,000 volts at 60
hertz for one minute with no current flow or leakage current in excess of one
milliampere under dry conditions.

Reduction of Excess Static Electricity

Designed to provide protection against hazards that may exist
due to excessively low footwear resistance, as well as maintain
a sufficiently high level of resistance to reduce the possibility of
excess static electricity and electric shock
*Be sure to understand and select the correct level of electrical resistance based
on the application; SD 100, SD 35, or SD 10
