ACS Non-Symposium Book Proposal Guidelines

TO INITIATE THE PUBLICATION PROCESS, PLEASE PROVIDE US WITH THE FOLLOWING

INFORMATION, WHEREVER APPLICAPLE, ABOUT THE PROPOSED BOOK:

• Title and Author(s): Provide us with a working title for your book, the name of the main
editor and co-editors, as well as their addresses, affiliations, phone and fax numbers, and
email addresses.

• Brief Description of Your Book: Provide us with a brief description of your book stating
the purpose and scope of the planned volume. Include how the book would complement
or update existing publications. If the book is a revision, explain what new material is
going in as well as what material, if any, is being removed. Try to estimate, as best you
can, what percentage of the material will be new or revised.

• Color Art: We can include color artwork in our books, but only if color is essential to
understanding the material. As it is very expensive to produce color artwork, it is our
policy to pay for one-half of the costs involved. The other half of the direct costs of
producing color photographs must be borne by the author, or by someone else such as the
editor or sponsoring division. Please indicate during the proposal stage if you anticipate
the use of color in any chapters.

• Table of Contents: Include a list of the chapter titles organized into a tentative table of
contents. Indicate authors if they have been assigned.

• Markets: Tell us who the primary and secondary markets are for your book (those
professionals or academics most likely to buy your book). Include specific job categories
(chemists, physicists, chemical engineers, etc.) if possible, in both professional and
academic environments. Remember, the marketing staff and sales force will use this
information to present your book as effectively as possible to the customer. Be as
comprehensive and accurate as possible when discussing marketing issues concerning
your book.

• Competition: Identify other competitive books currently on the market similar to your
own. This can include books from ACS as well as other publishers. If possible, indicate
the author, publisher, and date of publication. If you feel that your topic has not been
covered in the past in other published books, indicate this as well.

• Specific Book Information: Include in this section the tentative, complete manuscript
page count of your book, as well as some indication of the number of drawings, line art,
illustrations, tables, and figures. We understand that this information may change over
the course of book preparations, but an initial indication of the size of the book and
numbers of line drawings, etc., would be helpful to us. Note: For purposes of estimating
manuscript to book page sizes, a good working ratio is 3 manuscript pages equal 1 book
page, printed front and back.

• Deadline Dates: Indicate expected deadline dates in this section, which should include:
draft manuscript submission to editor, camera-ready manuscript submission to editor,
final manuscript submission to ACS. Keep in mind that preparation from draft to final
manuscript can take anywhere from 8 to 12 months.

• Reviewers: Please provide a list of 5-10 reviewers, within your field or discipline and
who are not listed as authors in your proposal, who would be willing to review the
proposal that you send to us. Be sure to include their email address so that we can send
them review materials as quickly as possible
