For centuries since the invention of the police organization and policing, the institution

has been characterized by a negative police culture—one of police brutality, corruption among

others. However, over the past few decades, there has been an effort to change this culture

through police reforms. Some of these reforms have been addressed in President Obama’s Task

Force on 21st-century Policing. The report addresses how some policies were institutionalized in

the police force, certain behaviors in some officers and to address these issues. These are the

same issues discussed in the documentary Policing the Police.

The police culture is one of the policies institutionalized within the police. This includes

police brutality, police gangs, and others. The report recommends that the police protect the

dignity of human rights more so in relation to police brutality. Other recommendations include

community policing, where the police work with the community more so in helping solve long

term causes of crime ("Policing the Police", 2020). In addition, it helps improve the relationship

between the community and the police and thereby making the police safer when among citizens.

In addition, officer wellness and safety have been addressed. In most cases, the officers’ wellness

and safety, more so mental health is not well managed. Being more considerate of them would

improve how they serve society.

These save issues have been addressed in related posts. An article on policing the police

highlights community policing as one of the solutions towards effective policing. In contrast, a

similar item has addressed both community policing and the mental health of officers. However,

this raises the question of whether police reforms are possible in a society where crime has

existed as long as humanity has existed?
