ENGLISH NOVEL I SPRING BÜTÜNLEME SINAVI July 17th, 2023

I-Comment on the following passage.

But the violation of marriage or any other unchastity was never heard of: And the married pair pass their lives with the
same friendship and mutual benevolence that they bear to all others of the same species who come in their way;
without jealousy, fondness, quarrelling or discontent.

This passage belongs to the A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms part of the book. Houyhnhnms are seen as a
virtuous species that lives in harmony without negativity such as jealousy and fighting. Thanks to this passage, Jonathan
Swift compares human society to Houyhnhnms society. He observes that quarrels and arguments in human relations
and marriages are not in Houyhnhnms. Overall, Swift offers readers the possibility of living in a society where human
relationships are all based on reason and goodness.

II-Comment on the following passage.

I said there was a society of men among us, bred up from their youth in the art of proving by words multiplied for the
purpose that White is Black, and Black is White, according as they are paid. To this society all the rest of the people are
slaves.

This passage is also found in chapter 4 of the book, known as A Voyage to the Country of Houyhnhnms. In this part of
the novel, Gulliver describes his encounter with a society of human-like beings known as the Yahoos. Yahoos are
portrayed as primitive, savage creatures with violent behavior. This passage is about the condition of humanity and the
degeneration of society. Swift tries to explain the spread of deception, greed and corruption in human relations through
this society. The idea that the rest of the people are slaves illustrates the idea that the population is subordinate to
those who hold authority.

III-Comment on the following passage.

When a great Office is vacant, either by death or disgrace (which often happens) five or six of those candidates petition
the emperor to entertain His Majesty and the Court with a dance on the rope; and whoever jumps the highest without
falling succeeds in the Office.

This passage is it is found in Part 3 of the book, known as A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Glubbdubdribb, Luggnagg, and
Japan. Gulliver visits Laputa. Here he encounters various strange customs and traditions. The passage describes an
absurd method used to fill vacant high-ranking positions in government. It's also a satirical critique of real-world politics
that candidates dance on a rope to determine the next person appointed. Swift criticizes the political system of her
time, describing such an absurd process to fill important posts. He also says that there is no honesty and merit in the
political system.
IV- Comment on the following passage.

My lord, said the holy man, I am no intruder into the secrets of families. My Office is to promote peace, to heal divisions,
to preach repentance, and to teach mankind to curb their headstrong passions. … I know my duty, aand am a minister of
a mightier prince than Manfred.

The holy man respectfully addresses the noble figure, stating that he acknowledges one's higher social status. He also
claims that he respects boundaries and privacy. His main responsibilities include promoting peace, separating conflict,
preaching about repentance, and guiding people. He claims that he is serving a prince more powerful than Manfred, and
that he is responsible to a divine power. In summary, this passage describes the holy man's sense of duty and moral
authority.
