Technical Specification - Forged Flange – WN

This specification is for purchasing Weld Neck Forged Flanges for use in pressure vessels, according to ASME
B16.5.
Notes: The Supplier must agree with every point below and state this position, in case of some deviation of
specification below, it must be clearly stated in a special item “Deviation”.
Only this item “Deviation” will be analysed.

1.0 Basic Material features.


a) Quantity: According to quotation and Purchasing order;
b) Manufacture: ASME B16.5
c) Pressure Class: See item 7.0.
d) Nominal Diameter: See item 7.0.
e) Schedule or Hub thickness: See item 7.0.
f) Type (Neck): WN (Weld Neck).
g) Face Type: See item 7.0.
h) Face finishing: Either a serrated concentric or serrated spiral finish having a resultant surface finish from
3.2 µ.m to 6.3 µ.m (125 µ.in. to 250 µ.in.) average roughness shall be furnished. The cutting tool
employed should have an approximate 1.5 mm (0.06 in.) or larger radius, and there should be from 1.8
grooves/mm through 2.2 grooves/mm (45 grooves/in. through55 grooves/in.), according ASME B16.5,
item 6.4.5.3.
i) Material: ASME Section II Part A, Ed. 2007 Ad.2009, specification SA 105.
j) Marking, according to SA 961:
. Supplier name;
. Heat number;
. Material(specification, grade, class);
. Pressure class;
. Designation B16;
. Size: nominal diameter / schedule or thickness
k) The sealing face must be protected with wooden disc or plastic
l) The machining surfaces must be protected by anticorrosive varnish of easy removal
Note: Supplier must prepare the welding end bevel for WN flanges in accordance with ASME B.16.5,
item 6.7 and figures 8 and 9.

2.0 Additional Material features.


a) Base material: Fully killed carbon steel forging.
b) Weld repairs are not allowed.

3.0 Normal Requirements


a) General conditions: Hot forged.
b) Type of Heat Treatment: Normalized, after hot forged, SA 961. (The CMTR shall inform the heat treatment
performed, heat treatment registers required).
c) Tensile properties results (SA 105, table 2), and Special Requirements below.
d) Chemical analysis results, (SA 105, table 1), except:
. C (Carbon), maximum of 0,30%.
. CE (Equivalent Carbon), maximum of 0,45%, following SA 105, S4.2

4.0 Special Requirements


a) Simulated Post-Weld Heat Treatment of Mechanical Test Coupons, (S17 of SA 788): test coupons shall
be heat treated according to the following parameters (treatment graphs required):
. Number of cycles: SPWHT in a unique cycle.
. Start and finish control temperature: 400°C;
. Maximum heating rate: 200°C/h;
. Maximum cooling rate: 200°C/h;
. Soaking time: total of soak time: 6h.
. Soaking temperature: The operation of heat treatment shall be carried out by one of the procedures
given in UW-40, of ASME VIII div.1 Edition 2007 Ad.2009, and in accordance with requirements of
UCS-56, Yield and tensile strength according to SA 105 Table 2, after simulated Post Weld Heat
Treatment (above).
b) Hardness after SPWHT, 190HV or 187HBW maximum.
5.0 Others Requirements

a) Certificates according EN 10204 – Type 3.1


b) Personnel Qualification and Certification in Non-destructive Testing, according ISO 9712 or EN 473
c) All tests and results must be included in CMTR (Certified Material Test Report). Data of heat treatment
(time and temperature, no graphs) must be shown on CMTR too.
d) All Technical Documentation, certificates and reports “CMTR” must be submitted to approval, before
delivery.
e) Preparation for shipment: as manufacturer standard, and item 1, above.
