Wiring Power Supply

A two-terminal connector on the rear panel of the M400 evaluation units is provided for the power
connection. The evaluation unit is designed to operate from a 20-30 VDC or a 100 to 240 VAC
power source. The terminal block for power connection is labelled with “Power”. Connect “L” at the
evaluation unit and “+ 24” to the Cobrix 5 distributor. Repeat with “N” and “- 24”.

Wiring Oxygen Sensor

The optical oxygen sensor must be connected to the board TB 4 on the rear panel of the M400
evaluation unit. The pinning of the cable is given in the table below:

Board Pin No. Sensor Wire Color Function

1 brown Sensor +

2 black Sensor -

Wiring Analog Output to Analog Input of the mPDS 5

The analog output 1 on board TB 2 is used for the connection to the mPDS 5. Connect the cable to
the analog output of the M400 evaluation unit and to the analog input of the mPDS 5 (the correct
analog input on mPDS 5 is given in the configuration sheet or directly in the diagnosis menu of the
mPDS 5).

Start-up:
(PATH: Menu/Quick Setup)

Hint
If the option oxygen sensor is ordered together with a Cobrix 5 the start-up settings are performed
by Anton Paar.

Settings at the M400 evaluation unit before the first measuring:

Hint:
The M400 valuation unit automatically detects the oxygen sensor, once the sensor is connected
Bring up the main menu, select “Quick Setup” and press [Enter].
Set the parameters as described in the picture below and press [Enter].

Channel Selection =
ISM
Parameter = = O2 Opt

Set the parameters for oxygen unit and analog output as described in the picture below.
Press [Enter] to switch in the next window.

Set the scaling for the analog output as described in the picture below.
Press [Enter] to switch in the next window.

Press [Enter] until the evaluation unit asks to save the changes. Select “Yes & Exit” und press
[Enter]
The M400 evaluation unit saves the new settings.

Replacing the OptoCap

To replace the OptoCap unscrew the cap-sleeve.

Hint
If the cap sleeve is detached, take care of the inner part of the sensor shaft. Damage and soiling of
the inner parts and optical fibre may influence the signal or destroy the sensor. Clean with a lint-
free cloth.

When changing the OptoCap, please observe the following instructions:

Hint
Make sure that this maintenance step is carried out in a clean place.

1. Unscrew the cap sleeve from the sensor shaft and carefully pull it off the sensor.
2. Pull off the OptoCap.
3. Place the new OptoCap on top of the inner body of the sensor shaft.
4. Carefully slip the cap sleeve over the fitted OptoCap and screw it down. The cap sleeve
must be clean and dry.
5. After each exchange of the OptoCap, the DLI must be reset manually.
6. After each exchange of the OptoCap, the sensor must be recalibrated with a two-point
sensor calibration.

Two-Point Sensor Calibration

(PATH: Cal)
The calibration of an optical sensor is always a calibration of the phase of the fluorescence signal
to the internal reference. A two-point calibration is a combination of an initial calibration in air
(100%) where a new phase P100 is measured followed by a calibration in nitrogen (0%) where a
new phase P0 is measured. This calibration routine gives the most accurate calibration curve over
the whole measuring range.
Calibration:
 Select 2 point as the calibration type. Press [Enter].
 Place the sensor in air
 Enter the value for Point 1 including a decimal point and units (100.00 %air).
The value in the second text line is the value being measured by the M400 evaluation unit resp.
sensor in the units selected by the user.
As soon as the stabilisation criteria have been fulfilled, the display changes and prompts you to
change the gas.
 Place the sensor in the second calibration gas and press the [Enter] key to continue with
the calibration.
 Enter the value for Point 2 including a decimal point and units (0.000 %air)
The value in the second text line is the value being measured by the M400 evaluation unit resp.
sensor.
As soon as the stabilization criteria have been fulfilled the display changes. The display now
shows the values for the phase of the sensor at 100% air (P100) and at 0% air (P0).
 Press [Enter] to save the calibration.
 Press [Enter] to re-install the sensor.
After pressing [Enter] the evaluation unit returns to the measuring mode.

DLI: Dynamic Lifetime Indicator

(PATH: Menu / Configure / ISM Setup)
Hint
If the option oxygen sensor is ordered together with a Cobrix 5 the settings for the DLI are
performed by Anton Paar.
The DLI provides information about the remaining lifetime of the OptoCap. As long as the DLI is
above zero days the system is within the specified accuracy after a calibration. If the DLI is zero
the OptoCap needs to be replaced. The DLI is shown in display line 3 of the M400 evaluation unit.

Notice
From time to time check the lifetime of the OptoCap and change once if the lifetime is zero.

Contributing factors for ageing of the OptoCap:

 Number of measurements
 Temperature during measurement
 Oxygen concentration during measurement
 Number of CIP cycles
 Number of SIP cycles
 Number of autoclavings

The DLI is calculated in two different ways.

Continuously: With the above parameter an actual sensor stress is calculated. With each
measurement the sensor wear is increased. The accumulated sensor wear divided by the elapsed
time is the basis of the calculation of the remaining lifetime.
During calibration: The phase values are compared to the phase values of the last calibration.
Using the above calculated sensor wear and the elapsed measurement time since the last
calibration, the remaining lifetime of the OptoCap is calculated. The wear calculated after
calibration is more accurate than when measured continuously, therefore the DLI value can be
significantly different after calibration.
Activate the Dynamic Lifetime Indicator
Follow the path: Menu / Configure / ISM Setup / Sensor Monitoring and tap on < Enter >. Set the
Lifetime Indicator and the Alarm to “Yes”. The Lifetime is shown in display row 3.
It is possible to select an alarm relay for the Lifetime Indicator to get an additional signal.
Increase the Lifetime of the OptoCap
If you do not need the highest accuracy for O2 measurement it is possible to set the time interval
for measurement to 30 seconds or higher.
Follow the path: Menu / Configure / Measurement / Channel Setup and tap on < Enter >. Select
your prefer time interval for measure O2.
Tip
Anton Paar set the interval for O2 measurement to 30 seconds. For beer applications a lower time
interval for measurement like 3 seconds is recommended.
