LOS ANGELES 16 - CALIFORNIA aa EXCELLENCE IN ELECTRONICS ROBERTS Naat {Aa *99O%wvns997’ Hi AN UAL 4 TRACK STEREO TAPE RECORDERS GENERAL INFORMATION ‘The Roberts Models 990 and 997 are four-track stereo tape recorders which will record and playback four-track stereo, and four-track monaural tapes, ‘They will also playback two-track stereo tapes, Both models operate at tape speeds of 15, 7 1/2, and 9 3/4 ips with equalizatica provided, ‘The Model 997 also provides for sound-with- sound recording, and a stereo output speaker control panel with siz: stereo output jacks. Operate the recorders from a 110-120 volt AC, 60 eycle source only. A conversion kit (Part No, 51” 99) 1s available for 50 cycle operation. SPECIFICATIONS FREQUENCY RESPONSE: 40 to 15,000 eps @ 7 1/2 ips, +2 ab; 40 to 12,000 eps @ 3 3/4 ips, +3 ab; SIGNAL-TO-NOISE RATIO: 50 db below record "0" level. WOW AND FLUTTER: Less than 0.12% rms. EQUALIZATION: Record and Playback, based on NAB standards, REEL SIZE: 3", 5" or ™ FUNCTION OF CONTROLS A~ Play Record ‘This is a three-position control, When this con- trol is straight up, it is in Neutral position; turning to the right places it in Play and Record positions, respectively. To prevent accidental erasure, the Re- cord Interlock button must be depressed before the bar knob can be moved into the Record position. ‘This control is mechanically interlocked with the Rewind- Forward control. The Rewind-Forward control must be in its Neutral position beforethe Play-Record con- trol can be placed in either mode, B — Rewind-Forward ‘This is athree-position control. When this con- ‘trol is straight up, itis in Neutral position, Turning ‘the bar type control knob clockwise places it in the Forward position, which transfers the tape rapidly from supply reel to take-up reel. Turning the control counterclockwise places it inthe Rewind position, which transfers the tape rapidly from take-up reel to supply reel, This control is mechanically interlocked with the Play-Record control. The Play-Record control must ein Neutral position before turning the Rewind~ Forward control C— Stop Lever ‘The recorder may be stopped momentarily by pushing upwardon the Stop lever. This lever removes the pressure roller from the capstan, and stops the tape. ‘TheStop lever maybe released by slightly pres- sing inwardon the lever. Depressing the Start button, Aocatedon extreme rightof recorder, will also release the Stop lever. ‘The Stop lever and Start button function only in the Play-Record modes of operation, D — Record Lock Depressing the Record Interlock button while placing the Play-Record control in the Record posi- tion places the recorder in the Record position, E ~ Speed Change Lever The Speod Change lever is located between the two tape reels, Move lever to right and pull up for 71/2ipa, Moveleverto right and push down for 3 3/4 ips. A capstan bushing 18 used for changing the re- corder speedto15 ips, ‘The capstan bushing is stored, ‘whennot in use, on a mounting post located next to the rogram counter set knob, Remove capstan bushing, by turning. the thumb screw counterclockwise. Place bushing over capstan and tighten the thumb screw se curely. withthe fingers only. Move the Speed Change lever’ to the ight and pull up for a tape speed of 15 ips. Move the Speed Change lever to the right and push down for 71/2 ips. NOTE: TheSpeed Change lever shouldbe moved only when transport drive motor 1s Fun= ning. ~ Left Channel Volume Regulates the Left channel record level when recording and the volume when playing back a stereo tape or monaural tape, G ~ Left Channel Tone Controls Bass and Treble response on the Left channel during playback only. H — Right Channel Volume Regulates the Right channel record level when recordingand volume when playing back a stereo tape. | Right Channel Tone Controls Bass and Treble response on the Right channel during playback only. J = Equalization Control Bach channel contains an equalization switch to compensate for tapespeeds. K ~ Record Level Indicator ‘Adjust the left or right channel Volume control sothe pointer moves up to approximately mid-scale on the Record level meter during the loudest passage of the material being recorded. L— Power Switch ‘This is a three position toggle type switch, The center position is All Off in which no power is applied tothe unit, The upper position, All On, activates both thetape transport mechanism andthe amplifier. In the lower position, Amp. Off, power is applied only to the tape transport, 'M ~ Stereo Monaural Switch ‘This isa two position toggle type switch. ‘The upper position, Stereo, applies power to the Right Channel amplifier for stereo recording or”playback. ‘The lower position, Monaural, removes power from the Right Channel amplifier. NOTE: Allmonaural recordings are made with the Left Channel amplifier. N— Track Selector Rotatingthis control shifts the record and erase hheads into position to function as indicated. All four tracks maybe selected individually as well as two-and four-track stereo. Recording and playback may be done in all positions of this control except two-track ‘stereo, whichis used for playback of two-trark stereo tapes only. Fig. 2 illustrates the arrangement of the Play-Record heads inthe various positions ofthe Track Selector kab. 0 — Program Counter ‘The program counter is useful for logging ma- terialas tis recorded, or for locating previously log- {god material. Set the indicator at "000" at the begin- hing of a reel of tape; anydesired section on the tape may then be quickly located. P Normal Duet Switch (Model 997 Only) Permits a permanent recording to be mate on one trackand an accompanying "audition" recording on an- ‘other track. ‘The audition recording can be erased and re-recorded as many times as desired. ‘Speaker Selector ( Model 997 Only) A three-position switch used for monitoring the source as it is being recorded when in the Monitor position, The Normal position allows the internal speaker to be used. In the Mute position, the internal speakers are turned off and stereo recordings can be listened to when using stereo headsets or external speakers, INPUT AND OUTPUT JACKS External Speaker Used’ when connecting external speakers for playback, Microphone Plug microphoneinto these jacks for monophonic or stereo recording. Phono-Radio May be used for recording directly from AM/FM. tuner or phonograph, ‘Tape Head Output Connectto these outputs if the unit is to be con- nectec: to an external preamp and amplifier for play- ack. The power switch should be in the Amp Off Position when using these outputs. Preamp Output Connectto these outputs if the unit is to be con- nected to an external power amplifier for playback, Stereo Output Jacks ( Model 997 Only) Six jacks are available for stereo headsets or for external speakers. They can also, }e used for copying tapes from one tape recorder to another. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Threading The Tape 1, Place reelof tape on left spindle and an empty reet ‘onthe right spindle, Place the rubber reel retaining caps over the spindle shafts, 2, Thread tape over the left tape guide roller located next tothe head assembly. ‘The tape should then be placed inthe head assembly slot and over the pres- sure roller. The tape is then threaded under the moveable guide post, which actuates the automatic shut-off assembly, ‘and into the slot on the empty reel. Rotate the take-up reel counterclockwise to remove slack in the tape, To Make a Monaural Recording 1, ‘Thread the tape as doseribed under "Threading the Tape", 2, Place the Track Selector knob in the Monaural 1-4 position, 3. TurntheSpeed Selector lever to the desired speed, 4, Plug microphone into the microphone jack on the front panel of the Left Channel amplifier. 5. Turn on power by placing the power switeh in the All Onposition. Allow sufficient time for the tubes to warm up. 6, Depress the Record Interlock button while placing the Play-Record control into the Record position. Depress Start button. 7. Advance the Left Channel volume control while observing the Record level meter, The correct re- cording level is reached when the pointer approaches mid-scale on the loudest passage. 8. Hold the microphone approximately eight inches from the mouth when recording voice, 9. Place the microphone two or three feet in front of the loudspeaker when recording from a radio, phono graph, or TV set. To Play a Monaural Recording 1, ‘Threadthe tape as described under "Phreading the Tape". 2, Set the Speed Change lever in the correct position to correspond to the tape to be played. 3. Move the power switch to the All On position, Al- low sufficient time for the tubes to warm up. 4, Rotate the Play-Record control clockwise to the Play position. Depress Start button and advance Volume and Tone controls to the desired level. Lift upward on Stop lever to interrupt a recording briefly. Press inward on Stop lever or depress Start button and the recorder will continue to op- erate, Four Track Recording Four monaural recordings canbe made ona single tape, Proceed as follows: 1, Place the Track Selector control in the 1-4 mon- aural position and record the tape in this position, Track 41 will now be recorded, 2, Turn the tape over, re-thread the tape, and make another recording. Track #4 willnowbe recorded. 3, Place the Track Selector control in the monaural 3-2position, Repeat the process described in Steps Land 2, Tracks 2 and 3 will now be recorded, Recording From FM Stereo Broadcasts 1. Threadthe tape as desert Tape". sd under "Threading the 2 Connect Left and Right channel outputs from tuner to corresponding Phono-Radio jacks on the re- corder. 3, Place the Track Selector knobin the 4~Track Stereo Position. 4, Depress the Rerord Interlock button and place the Play-Record control in the Record position. 5. Observethe VU meters anit aajust the Volur:<'Con~ trois on both amplifiers to peak at approximately mid-scale, Use of the Pause Lever will permit proper adjustment of recording level without the tape being in motion. To Make a Stereo Recording 1, Threadthe tape as described under "Threading the Tape". 2, Plug a microphone into each of the microphone jacks. Position microphones approximately 7 feet apart for best results, Speed Solector lever to the desired tape 4, vet Luyalization control to the speed at which the recording is being made, 5. Place the Track Selector control in the Four-track Stereo position. NOTE: The Two-TrackStereo position may not be used for recording, It is to be used for playback of pre-recordedtwo-track stereo tape only. 8. Place the Power switch in the All On position, (Place) ‘The Stereo-Monaural switeh in the Stereo position. ‘1. Move the Stop lever upward until it locks into posi- tion. Depress the Record Interlock button while placing the Play-Record lever in the Record posi- tion. 8, Adjust the Volume controls until the record level indicators peak at approximately mid-scale on the loudest passages. (Therecord level meters should read approximately the same for proper balance on each channel.) Depress thestart button to start the tape in motion. To Play Stereo Recordings 1, Threadthe tape as described under “Threading the Tape". 2. Placethe TrackSelector control to either the four- trackor two-track Stereo position according to the tape to be played, 8. Place the power switch in the All Gn position, Place The Storeo-Monaural switch in the Stereo position, 4, Set equalization control to the speed of the tape to be played. 5. Movethe Stop lever upward until i¢ locks into posi tion. Turn the Play-Record lever clockwise to the Play position, 6. Depress the Start button and rotate the Volume and Tone controls to the desired listening level. If ex- ternal speakers are to be used for stereo playback, place speakers at least 7 feet apart, To Edit and Splice Tape NOTE: Since one track cannot be edited and spliced without affecting the other track, recordings to be edited should be limited to one track only. 1, Tape may be edited by cuttingout unwanted portions, ory joining selections into another sequence. An- nouncements, etc., can be inserted between selec tions, Unused tape can be spliced for re-use. 2, For best results, cut the tape at a slight diagonal, join the ends with a butt joint, and fasten them on the glossy side with splicing tape. ‘Trim off any excess width, To Record From a Stereophonic Record ‘Thread the tape as described under "Threading the Tape". 2, Makedirect connections from a crystal or ceramic type cartridge to the Left and Right channel Radio- Phono inputs on the record: 3. Place a Stereo record on the phonograph, 4. Depress the Record Interlock button and place the Play-Record control in the Record position, Fig. 2. Use of the Pause Lever will permit proper adjustment of the recording level without the tape being in motion, Recording Sound with Sound (Model 997 Only) 1, Thread the tape, 2, Move Power switch to All On position, and adjust speed change lever to desired speed. 3. Set tape equalization control to correct position de- pending on speed used, 4, Turn the right channel Volume control to "0", and adjust left channel Volume control for normal re~ cording, 5, Plug microphone into left channel Microphone in~ put jack. If recording from radio or phonograph, connect cable to Phono-Radio input jack, 6. Place Duet switch in Normal position and proceed with recording as outlined under "To Make a Mon- aural Recording.’ 1, After recordings completed, rewind tapeto starting point, 8, Move Duet switch to Duet position, 9, Turn right channel Volume control to "I" or position, 10,Connect microphone to left channel Microphone input. 11,Place Play-Record switch in the Play position and Track Selector In 3-2 position, 12,Turn Speaker Selector to the Normal position, 18.Depress Startbutton, and while lstening to thefirst recording, record the “Audition” track, 14.When recording is completed, rewind tape to start= ing point. ‘The Duet switch returns to Normal posi- tion automatically when Rewind switch is used, 15.Turn Speaker Selector to the Normal position, Playing Back Sound with Sound Recordings (Model 997 only) . DISASSEMBLY To Remove Tape Transport 1, Remove the three panels on rear of case by re- moving two screws in each of the panels. 2, Remove switch extension lever (118) from tape transport. ‘This may be done by inserting a serew- driver through the center opening in rear of case and removing the two Phillips head screws holding extension lever. 3. Removethe screws holding reel tables and remove reel tables, 4, Loosen the set-screw in speed change lever and remove lever. 5. Remove two screws holding perforated dress plate and remove dress plate. 6. Loosen set-screws and remove all control knobs on tape transport, 11 Insert small screwdriver under cap on pressure roller, and remove cap. Remove screw holding pressure roller, Remove pressure roller, 8. Remove capstan bushing storage post and screw holding front escutcheon, Remove front escutcheon, 9, Remove speaker leads and all inter-connecting plugs from transport, 10, Remove the four screws holding the transport ‘mounting plate to ease. 11. Lift transport from case, To Remove Left or Right Channel Amplifier 1, Remove four screws in front panel of amplifier. 2, Remove all inter-connecting plugs. 3, Remove amplifier from case, CLEANING ‘The record-playback and erase heads, pressure roller, and the capstan should be cleaned regularly ‘witha soft cloth and alcohol. As the tape passes over the heads and between the pressure roller and capstan ‘oxide is worn from the tape and deposited on th parts, This oxide will cause weak recording: Playback, poor erasure, and wow. LUBRICATION Under normal use, lubrication is not required, However, if unit is disassembled for repair or re- placement of parts, clean all bearings and sliding levers and apply a'thin coat of oil to their surfaces, Use a good grade of motor oil, Do not use sewing machine oll of the 3 in 1 type. ‘The ottom motor bearing should be oiled every six months and the top bearing once a year. The idler wheels and spindle assemblies should be olled period- {cally. A few drops of oll down the spring shaft from the underside of the spindle assemblies will be sui ficient, Donot attempt tooil spindles from the topside of the deck, ‘When lubricating idler wheels and spindle as~ semblies, do not allowoll to reach the rubber portions of idler wheels, belts, or felt clutch pads. ADJUSTMENTS Record-Play Head Azimuth 1, Thread @ standard 10 ke alignment tape on the transport, Turn track Selector to stereo-4 (=) position. 2, Connect an AC voltmeter to a standard phone plug and insert the plug into the output jack, 8, Remove the Deck Control Panel (12).
