Extensive Research: NCERT books are written & published after a great amount of research has been done by reputed people in the field. Authentic: NCERT books are an authentic source of information as the information published is provided by government agencies & institutions. Standard book for all exams: They are standard books for all exams & questions therein are also reliable. Correct information: NCERT books are checked and rechecked many times before they are published, so the information is correct. Good for understanding concepts: These books cover topies in a well framed manner. They start with the basics and go on to a higher level, unlike many other books. So, you are looking to clear your concepts NCERT is the way to go. NCERT texts being textbooks for school children are written in a very simple and lucid manner. They are not only easy to study, but also can help to save a lot of time. You can quickly grasp dificult topies and concepts. If aspirants have enough time, it is always advised to start from standard 6 NCERT texts and read till standard 12 texts for all relevant subjects. Combining all the subjects from all the classes you need to read about 40-44 books in total. For general studies, NCERT books work best since you need not go into the details of any concept. Generally, the old NCERT books are recommended for history and new ones for geography. All keywords in the books must be noted, Revise from the NCERT books 2 ~3 times before the UPSC exam. Avoid reading descriptions from these books; they are meant for school kids alone. NCERT text books are particularly important for these subjects — history, polity, economy, geography, biology, chemistry and physics. ©latin Verma All Rights Reserved. https://www jatinverma.org Page la + Have a time schedule to finish your NCERT reading and stick to it. How to Read? + Before you begin, go through the previous years’ preliminary question papers and analyze them. + This should give you a brief idea about the type of questions UPSC asks under each topic and the frequency of these questions, + Knowing what's important under each topic will make your approach easier. + Not all NCERTs are necessary. + We need to cover 2 categories of NCERT books. 1, Book which require thorough reading: > History : Old NCERTs 9th and 10th (World History), 11th and 12th (Ancient, Medieval and Modern) > Geography: 11th and 12th Book which require 2-3 reading > Social Sciences: 11th and 12th Political Science & Sociology (New NCERTs) > Thus you only have 7-8 NCERT books that you should know thoroughly and around 10 others which you should have at least read more than 1 time, y Just give a quick reading to these NCERT textbooks. > Reading speed should be 2-3 books per week 7 Highlight important lines and supplement your knowledge with Google Search and Wikipedia v Stage 1: First reading: It should be basic reading like a novel, one should get the feel of the content while reading > Stage 2:Second Reading: In this reading conscious effort should be paid in understanding things one has already read. > You will find new things which somehow got missed in the first stage. > Think and introspect 10-20% of you time while reading. v You should also highlight and make small indications in the book itself. ©latin Verma All Rights Reserved. https://www jatinverma.org v v v y v Pages This will help in getting a deep analysis of concepts required, Stage 3: Synopsis: This is last and most important stage, here you should make a synopsis of 5-8 pages(Total) based on your understanding of concepts read. This should be for all the NCERTs. One can make flow chart and note important concepts in synopsis. Along with NCERT don’t forget to refer previous years question papers , you will surprised to find many questions based on very basic concepts. Notes Making Process: The process mentioned might take some time initially but notes making process should be precise, since it is practically impossible to makes detailed notes. Smart approach with innovation is needed here. Timeline for NCERT: A student devoting 5-6 hours on a average should be able cover NCERT’s in 3-4 months. Answer Writing: Write something for at least 10-15 minutes daily on the concepts covered. Boxes after each chapter The NCERTs contain boxes of information after each chapter. These are important for a UPSC candidate. Questions can be asked from this section also. How to read NCERT Books for UPSC Class Wise: The first method is reading all the books class wise starting from Std. 6th. This is a good way to read specifically for the exams when you have a time constraint. Subject Wise: The second method is to read the NCERT books subject wise. In this method you pick up one particular subject and read all the books from class 6 to 12. The best method is to read NCERTs subject wise as you will get your concepts clear and also retain the information much longer. Read NCERT books subject wise for exam preparation- swim with flow, If you read NCERT books subject wise you will understand the subject easily and your basic knowledge gets stronger and concepts get clearer. In contrast if you read NCERT books by the first method i.e. class wise you will get less knowledge because this method creates gaps between the same subject ©latin Verma All Rights Reserved. https://www jatinverma.org Page 16 + More time is consumed when more gaps are between the same subject = more memory loss (first method) +L 3s time is consumed if no gap is between the same subject =more memory(second method) + Start your preparation from class 6 NCERT books. + Choose any subject of your interest. + Complete all chapters from the chosen subject in the targeted time. * Move on to another class. + Then in the same way read all the books up to class 12 and complete the subject + Repeat the same process with another subject in the same way. How to do this? + Make a timetable for yourself. + Note how much time do you have in your hands and how much you can devote to this. + Then make a to- do list (for topics and subjects) for one month. * Then break down this one month to- do list to one week and then to one day. + This way you will achieve more in less time.
