Sitemap When I started writing Baking Basics, I had no idea it would be a popular page in my blog. Most beginners who read my basics of cooking find it so useful and when I hear those nice great reviews on the page, I'm inspired to write more. If you are a regular reader, then you may know that I made a post about my old Morphy Richards OTG but with new models on the market, the post seems too
dated. So I decided to write a new post with my new Sunflame oven (although it's a year) Many like my videos so I also made a video explaining the interior and functions of my OTG. If you love reading, read on, but if you like visual presentation, watch the video below. I tried to cover all the functions you need to know for successful cooking. If you're a beginner, don't forget to check out my Baking Basics
page (click on the name to visit the page)Selecting an oven:My oven is Sunflame 66lt, but most of the ovens available on the market have the same type of knobs, so it would be easier for you to read this post what brand you might have. Before selecting an oven, brand or capacity, understand how much you will be cooking. If you are cooking for a small family and if you do it from time to time then go for a
smaller oven. But if you want to cook regularly and have a slightly large family, you could go for 30 to 40 ovens lt. And if you're aiming to start at home bakery go for a bigger one. Many ask me whether to buy an OTG or a MW Convection. My advice would always be to go for OTG. Convection ovens are too small, and when it comes to bread baking, you need to make small loaves. So, if you are really
interested in cooking and want to proceed successfully in the field, my advice would be to go for an OTG. You can always buy a SINGLE MW for your cooking needs (which is what I did)Know The Inside Of The Oven: Filaments: The main difference between a MW convection and an OTG is the filament. The MW convection oven uses a fan to circulate the hot air that cooks the dish, but in OTG, there are
two filaments one on the top and the other on the bottom, which heats and cooks the dish. Nowadays OTGs also have the fan, which circulates hot air inside. Using the combination of filament and fan, the heat inside the oven is also inside reducing hot spots. Trays: Each oven is equipped with three trays, one for baking cookies and for placing cans for cooking, one is a wire rack that can also be used to
grill kebabs on the downside and one as a drip tray that remains at the bottom of the oven and helps keep the oven clean all those drops. You also get a rotisserie rod that can be used to grill a whole chicken. As I'm not in this, I left it out in the post. But your manual will help you understand it. Arriving at the side panel, the first dial you see is the temperature knob. Check the temperature settings. In India it
is mostly in degrees Celsius, but some may be in Fahrenheit. Mine is at. Min Min it is 100 degrees centigrade and the maximum is 250 degrees centigrade. You can rotate the dial to choose the setting you need or as suggested in the specified recipe. Next up is the function selector. You can use OTG for many functions such as baking, grilling, toasting and rotisserie. Then, according to the dish you are
going to cook, you need to select the correct function. The first is a square. When you select it, it only turns on the light inside and keeps the oven warm. You can use this to prove your bread dough if the weather is too cool. The second turns on both strands and he fan. This is what I normally use to bake all my cakes, biscuits and bread. The next one only turns on the top filament and fan, and this setting
can be used to grill food. Place the tray on the top rack and select this function and you can grill all the dishes. The next one on the dial only turns on the filaments and the fan is off. This setting can be used as a toaster and some recipes that do not call for the fan function. It can also be used to bake cakes and biscuits. Next up is the Rotisserie setting. Turns on the top filament and rotisserie rod that rotates
when mounted. This will be useful when grilling a whole chicken marinated in spices. The last one turns on all the heating elements inside, that is, both the filaments, the fan and the rotisserie rod. So, when you are making combination dishes, you can use this. I hardly use it. The final dial is the timer knob. You can set the timer or you can choose to keep on so that the oven stays on until it turns off. The
timer comes to 60 minutes, but if you use the oven all day, it is better to set it to stay. Preheating: Many of you ask me for preheating. Then why should we preheat an oven? Let me explain. When you turn on an oven, the temperature inside is the room temperature. But each recipe suggests a certain temperature for that particular dish. The oven takes some time to reach the particular temperature. So,
when you turn on the oven, the internal temperature is not what the recipe suggests. Then the oven takes some time to heat up to the required temperature. Some recipes ask you to bake in a cold oven, that is, just set the temperature, turn it on and place the dish inside. But if not mentioned, you need to set the temperature, turn on the oven and give it some time to get to the required temperature. Always
heat the oven for 15 to 20 minutes before putting my dish inside. This 15-20 minutes is the pre-warm-up time and this is important to cook any dish properly. I usually write it as preheating the oven to 180 degrees centigrade. So some of my readers ask me what the cooking temperature would be? If there is no other temperature mentioned in the recipe, the cooking temperature is also the same as the
preheating temperature. Bake:After seeing each function in an OTG, you now get to how to set an oven before cooking. Read the recipe carefully. Check which rack should be placed the tray, tray, given, check the cooking time and see there are other details regarding cooking. First set the necessary temperature. Next set the function according to the recipe, whether it is cooking, toasting or grilling. finally
set the timer to stay on or add the pre-heating time and cooking time and set the timer. Turn on the oven and wait for the preheating time to be finished. Then open the oven, place the dish and close it immediately. Then wait until the cooking time is over. Before you don't open the oven for any reason. Once the time is up, turn off the oven, remove the dish from the oven and cooking is done. Understanding
your oven: This is the most important point I can give you. Each oven is different. After knowing all the functions, it is easy for you to set up an oven for cooking. But the results may vary, and that's the reason. The author of the recipe gives you the recipe having its oven in mind. But the oven may not be the same and may work differently. So it is so important to understand how the oven works, how it heats
up, whether there are hot spots inside, whether the heat is uniform or irregular, whether the temperature is perfectly aligned with the setting or not, and so on. This takes time. It may even take months to figure out the oven and only you can. At first it can be quite frustrating if any dish fails, but once you get the blockage of it, you will like it. I tried my best level to explain the OTG and I'm sure you'll find it
useful if you're a beginner. Share it with your friends and comment on the post. I like to hear new ideas from readers. And don't forget to check out my video.
