SUTURING

Suture: - is a thread like material used to close surgical wounds and


unite two edges of cut tissue

 Infection
 Anesthesia reaction
 Scar-keloid
 Dehiscence
 Purpose
 To approximate wound edges until healing occurs
 To speed up healing of wound
 To minimize the chance of infection
PROCEDURES: DONE NOT
DONE

1. Identify the pt & introduce yourself to the pt and Explain  


procedure to patient

2. Hand washing & Prepare all the materials needed such as

 Sterile equipment  Clean procedure


 Pick up forceps  
 Tray or trolley
 Small towel (for drying hand)  Protective materials
 Large towel  Screen
 Fenestrated towel  Examination glove
 Dressing set (3 artery forceps,  Sterile solution for cleaning
tissues, scissors) (H2O2)
 Suture Set (Needle holder,  receiver
tissue forceps & scissors)  Plaster
 Sterile cat- gut or silk  Local anesthesia
 2 round dishes  syringes & needle
 1 kidney dish  V/S
 Sterile gloves  light
 2 drams (1 for cotton & the
other for gauze)
 Surgical glove

3. Adjust light  

4. Put examination glove and Clean the wound thoroughly  

5. Wash your hands again  

6. Put on sterile gloves  

7. Drape the Wound with the hold- sheet  

8. Infiltrate the edges of the wound to be sutured with local  


anesthesia.

9. Approximate the edges of the fascia with the help of the tissue  
forceps and using the round needle and cat- gut. Suture the fascia
layer first.

10. Using the cutting needle and silk, suture the outer layer of skin  
approximating the edges with the help of the tissue forceps.

11. Clean with iodine and cover with sterile gauze.  

12. Remove the hole- Sheet  

13. Make patient comfortable  

14. Remove all equipment, wash & return to its proper place or send  
for sterilization

Removal of the Stitch


Face 3-5 days,
lower extremity 14 days
rest body 7-10 days

Note
 Do not suture wounds that are over 24 hrs. old. However, such
 wounds have to be seen by a doctor since excision of all dead &
devitalized tissue and eventual suturing may be required.
 Check that the patient gets his order for T.A.T before he leaves the
hospital.
 Before you suture any wound, make sure it is free of any foreign
bodies.
