GomBurZa Reaction Paper

DOES BEING LIBERAL REQUIRE A HIGH PRICE?
GomBurZa is a Philippine historical biographical film that features
and follows the lives of the the three titular priests during the latter years
of the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines. It is a cinematic masterpiece
of a film that apart from encouraging Pinoy Pride through making us look
back on our tragic history as well as those who’ve fought for the freedom
we have today. The historical film about three native secular priests
poses a very important question: Does being liberal require a high price?
Throughout the entire film, the risk of being liberal is presented. As shown
with the first scene of the conflict between secular priests and the friars
regarding the ownership of the parish in Antipolo, the notion of being
liberal through speaking out against the friars is clearly presented.

In addition to towards the end of the film, the risk of being liberal is
further shown in the execution of the three titular priests from false
accusations of them being involved in the Cavite Mutiny due their liberal
views. Since the film shows the continuous risk of being liberal it is easy to
accept this as the case. When in fact, it isn’t, as solely being liberal doesn’t
require a high price. However for situations where liberalism is needed, a
high price is to be payed. As if there is no reason for liberalism to exist,
there won’t be a high price to payed as shown in the cinematic history of
the Philippines.
