I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

By William Wordsworth
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Golden Daffodils
In “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” by, William Wordsworth, there is the reoccurring use of personification
and rhyming, which is important because of the picture the author is trying to paint in the reader’s mind.
The author uses the golden daffodils as a symbol for his message, describing this scenery of a field a golden
daffodils surrounded by trees and beside a lake. The scenery is described as perfect and jocund, a place he
can go to feel at peace. The thought of the golden daffodils is one that he reflects on often as he is at home
wanting to feel at peace as he once did alongside the daffodils. The use of personification in this poem is
very important as it is used to make the words come alive, using human actions to describe the scenery
helps immerse the reader in the poem. Another message that can be taken from this poem as it relates to
society is, experiencing nature more and realizing the importance of appreciating where you live. People
may often get caught up on technology or social media however, there is so much to experience outside in
the real world. This is something many people may have realized given the pandemic and being in
quarantine. Overall, the take away from this poem is to think of something that brings you peace and
happiness and use that when in a moment of stress to take you back to that moment.
