FUGRO NORWAY AS – SATELLITE POSITIONING

1. INTRODUCTION
This document introduces the Fugro 9265-GNSS/IALA and its installation and operation usage.

2. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The 9265 GNSS box is a GNSS receiver with built-in Beacon Receiver, a central processing unit handle
data traffic, internal logging and GUI software for quality monitoring. The 9265 receiver has 4 (four)
isolated RS422 ports for input of correction data and to output NMEA data to external systems. Additional
3 non-isolated RS232/RS422/RS485 is available.

IALA Station number or frequency can be set from the front display or through the receiver web interface.
It is not possible to output NMEA or RTCM Beacon data from the IALA system.

The Fugro 9265-GNSS/IALA receiver has DP++ and DVI output. These ports can be used to connect to
monitors onboard to give users better overview and more information on status and on position quality.

3.2 Configuration of Fugro 9265-GNSS/IALA receiver

Configuration of 9265 receiver is done through pre-defined configuration files from manufacture. This is
acquired by filling in a Configuration Request Form (CRF) and sending this to
seastarservice@fugro.com. Configuration files are sent in return and uploaded as described below.
Note that configuration is not done on-fly and reboot, shutdown and signal dropout may be expected
during configuration process.

3.2.1 Install Central Processing Unit Configuration file

i. Use Seastar GNSS display software and navigate to About page. Select Core Configuration from
the Web Interface list. This will bring up a web browser to a configuration page.
ii. Use the Web Browser and navigate to upload configuration file. Press ‘Select File’ and locate the
settings.ini and config.ini files to be uploaded. Select both and press upload.
iii. Navigate to Status page and restart the service. The process will start up again with the newly
uploaded configuration file.

3.2.2 Install GNSS Receiver Configuration file

i. Use Seastar GNSS display software and navigate to About page. Select GNSS Receiver from the

4. OPERATION GUIDE
This section describes how the equipment can be used by the operator.

4.1 Beacon Receiver Front Panel Interface

This section gives quick information on what can be shown on the Beacon receiver front panel. More
detailed information should be extracted from the web interface.

4.1.1 Check beacon signal

First navigate to Home Screen by pressing ESC button 3 times in a row. Use Up or Down arrow until
screen how Beacon Tracking, Enter with Right arrow. This will bring you into Beacon tacking submenu.
Use UP and Down arrow to toggle between Beacon Name, Beacon Status, ID, Signal to Noise Ratio,
Frequency and Bit Rate. Range to station is only available when combined GNSS and Beacon antenna
is used (i.e. GA830).

4.2 GNSS Receiver Front Panel Interface

This section gives quick information on what can be shown on the GNSS receiver front panel. More
detailed information should be extracted from the web interface.

4.2.1 Check L-Band tracking status and Fugro subscription information

First navigate to Home Screen by pressing ESC button 3 times in a row. Press Down arrow once,
followed by Right arrow. This will bring you to Seastar Tracking menu. Now you can toggle between the
different pages with Up and down arrow key. The available pages are HP Engine Subscription
information, VBS Subscription Information, L-Band Beam with signal to noise information and link
frequency. Signal to noise value must be above 35 to get lock and above 37 to have acceptable signal
level.

4.2.2 Check operation mode

Operation mode is shown on Home screen. Top left corner shows the operation mode with the following
options, AUT=Autonomous (no corrections), DGPS=Differential GPS (external code based differential
mode), VBS=Virtual Base Station (code-based differential mode for virtual station), XP/G2/G4=Fugro
PPP (orbit and clock PPP solution). The Home Screen show number of satellites used in position
solution. The information is presented with a two character for constellation, followed by number of
satellites in use.

4.3 Fugro QC Display Software

The QC Display software is a position display with simplified quality control routines. It is designed to
follow GPS and GLOANSS standards for navigation equipment. This screen shows the default page.
This page is required when used as a type approved navigation sensor. A separate Skyplot view is
available when constellation is more interesting than the position, and the quality. Colour scheme is
selected in top right corner. Day, Dusk and Night mode is the available options.

4.3.1 Fugro QC Display Software - DGNSS Page

This page show UTC time, latitude, longitude, Speed Over Ground, Course Over Ground, and general
position quality parameters. It is designed to meet marine standards for positioning device in use for
navigation.

4.3.2 Fugro QC Display Software - SKYPLOT page

Skyplot page show the current constellation of satellites in use. This may differ from satellites in view
which is available from the web interface.

4.4 Beacon Receiver Web Interface

Beacon receiver receive IALA corrections from local MF station. The only applicable page is therefore
the Beacon \ Configuration page. This is used to change the Tune Mode and to set station frequency
and baud.

Range of IALA stations is limited and it is therefore important to know where the station is, its capabilities
and which one to switch over to in case of signal dropout or change of operation region.

4.5 GNSS Receiver Web Interface

The GNSS Receiver web interface is quite comprehensive as there is a lot of settings in place to get
everything to play together. It is therefore advising that the receiver is locked for editing with a password.

Figure 12 GNSS Receiver Web Interface – Receiver Status \ Fugro page

Figure 13 GNSS Receiver Web Interface – Seastar \ Configuration page

Backup of clone files is stored on the 9265-GNSS/IALA receiver unit and on the internal memory of the
receiver. This is needed if configurations are lost or if receiver need to be swapped out. It is advised to
take additional backup of this file on regular intervals (quarterly or yearly).

More information about GNSS Receiver web interface is available in Fugro 9205-GNSS User Guide.

4.5.1 Change Internal demodulator beam on GNSS Receiver

Use left hand side menu and navigate to Seastar > Configuration. Set SV Name to desired beam. Save
with OK key.

4.5.2 Advanced correction control on GNSS Receiver

The default correction control on the Fugro 9205-GNSS is as following. 1) Internal L-Band demodulator,
2) External Fugro Correction input, 3) External RTCM input. This can be manipulated in several ways.
Changing priority between internal and external demodulator is done under Seastar – Configuration
menu, change between internal and external on ‘Preferred demodulator’. Set priority order of RTCM
input from the correction control menu under Receiver Configuration. Add a GNSS priority role; select
input port first, then select Base ID, insert the ID you want as highest priority. Now do same for secondary
priority. Note that Receiver will normally use network port with lowest port number if no prioritization is
set.
