Introduction
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) and the worldwide networking of
computers raises many questions about the future role of AI and cybernetic systems and
their impact on humans. There are warning signals that in the future, computer systems
could surpass or at least simulate and optimize human thinking. In addition, the
continuous tracking and surveillance of individuals in a smarter world increases the risk
of digital totalism, which could ultimately lead to the situation that the principles of
fairness and justice in our society will be replaced by the arbitrariness of the underlying
digital algorithms. This paper reviews the impact of cybernetic systems and AI on society
and draws attention to the requirements of ethical rules and humanistic principles to
protect against a regime of digital algorithms.
