Both diamond and graphite are formed by carbon atoms; the difference lies in the manner in which the carbon. atoms are bonded to one another, In diamond, each carbon atom is bonded to four other carbon atoms forming a rigid three-dimensional structure. In graphite, each carbon atom is bonded to three other carbon, atoms in the same plane giving a hexagonal array. One of these bonds isa double-bond, and thus the valency of carbon is satisfied. Graphite structure is formed by the hexagonal arrays being placed in layers one above the other. These two different structures result in diamond and graphite having very different physical properties even though their chemical properties are the same. Diamond is the hardest substance known while graphite is smooth and slippery. Graphite is also a very good conductor of electricity unlike other non-metals. Diamonds ccan be synthesised by subjecting pure carbon to very high pressure and temperature. These synthetic diamonds are small but are otherwise indistinguishable from natural diamonds. Fullerenes form another class of carbon allotropes. The first one to be identified was C-60 which has carbon atoms arranged in the shape of a football. Since this looked like the geodesic dome designed by the US architect Buckminster Fuller, the molecule wasnamed fullerene ‘Space for rough work Matix JEE Aeadomy + Piprall Road, Sikar Ph. 01872241911, Mob. 97836-21999, 7856-31999 1s sep ham rare mrad get he ARaoel A en ee erga mee Mr arr eas Bae sb oeamyst oh eae ers ha oh ee oe A sl he 8 ER a een TY or a ora} AT arse & a eng Peh er aa |e nee eh an eT set ord ha ATI BL gover eed rer mere a | art eh ee & Freeh rere etree ge | donee A ecard neater wer gaR oe RTE ere) FART ee ob oer Soe ae arama rg rah Ge eran oe area ee ART rere ee vce ee, aye rear eer ee Ro ora hae eer Rp, eh ae orgs geen ere ha | pe arb arctan oe a ye TITER TFTA (subjecting) ae ea esi Fa on wear a ea TOT BLAAE Sra areen Ao EMI BorreTaeTaE “qatar et sea | es eS C-60 ah rer ag Rae era wey petit hou H mater aE AR ae sftal anfdieae aafiee Ger (Buckminster Fuller) ara feorgs oye ree Yas} wa Tag, So TA ra gt eae Buckminsterfullerene is an allotropic form of mene STOR Te TRE B— (A) phosphorus / ees (B) sulphur / sere (©) carbon /-wrés (D)tin/ 40.
