WHAT IS
FLASHBACK?
FLASHBACK
FLASHBACKS ARE COMMON IN EVERY FORM OF FICTIONAL MEDIA.
THEY’RE TYPICALLY USED TO PROVIDE BACKSTORY OR
EXPOSITION IN A WAY THAT SHOWS INSTEAD OF TELLS—INSTEAD
OF HAVING A CHARACTER EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED, THE SCENE
IS DEPICTED FOR THE AUDIENCE. FLASHBACKS CAN BE SUDDEN
(DONE WITHOUT INTRODUCTION), BUT THEY CAN ALSO BE SET UP
IN SEVERAL WAYS, SUCH AS HAVING A CHARACTER SAY THEY
REMEMBER SOMETHING. IN OLD MOVIES, THIS WAS OFTEN
FOLLOWED BY A RIPPLING OR HAZY SCREEN EFFECT INTENDED TO
INDICATE THAT THE NEXT SCENE WAS A FLASHBACK.
ORIGIN OF FLASHBACK
FLASHBACK IS A COMBINATION OF THE
WORDS FLASH AND BACK—A TYPICAL
FLASHBACK FLASHES (TRANSITIONS)
BACKWARD (TO THE PAST). THE FIRST
RECORDS OF THE USE OF FLASHBACK AS A
TERM FOR A NARRATIVE TOOL COME
FROM THE EARLY 1900S.
IDENTIFYING THE
FLASHBACKS IN A STORY
AUTHORS USE TRANSITION PHRASES
SUCH AS “I REMEMBER WHEN,”
“ONCE, LONG AGO,” "YESTERDAY,"
"A WHILE BACK," "REMINDS ME OF,"
AND MORE.

Examples of Flashbacks
"In the children's movie Up, the old man
has a flashback as he remembers
meeting his wife and marrying her,
which helps us to better understand
why he does not want to leave the
house that they have shared."
Examples of “Bertha remembered the
Flashbacks feeling of her blood rushing
to her temples, the tightness
in the pit of her stomach.
One moment she was flying
down the hill at what felt
like an impossible speed. The
next, she was in the air, and
the hard asphalt was
rushing up to meet her.”
