RE: Overtime

We have recently been awarded a number of new contracts with various companies. The result

opposed to the current 12-hour days they are in operation. Rather than employ new workers only
to lay them off in a few months, we would like to offer our assembly line workers the opportunity
to earn some overtime. Employees may work up to 11 hours per day, three of which will be paid
as overtime. You will receive time and a half for every hour of overtime you work. Additionally,
we will be operating the line on both Saturdays and Sundays. Weekend shifts are entirely
voluntary and will be reimbursed at double time. Please note that overtime work is not mandatory.
Contact your foreman if you are interested in working overtime.

To: The Staff

From: Eddie Bauer, President

14
Subject: Office Supplies
Date: June 30

As you know, the recent recession has forced us to cut costs in many areas. One area where people
have not been fully cooperating is in regard to office supplies. For this reason the following
guidelines are being put in place:
1. Dave Smith has been designated as in charge of all supplies. All supplies must be checked through
him with your signature and his before they are removed from the storeroom.
2. There are monthly limits to how much of each item can be borrowed each month. Anything
exceeding these amounts must be approved by your manager and Dave Smith, and the justification
must be given in writing.
Along with these guidelines, here are some additional suggestions with regard to conservation
of these materials:
1. Hang on to your pens! We go through far too many pens in this office, this can only be because
people are carelessly losing them.
2. People should always print on both sides of office paper before recycling, unless this is for official
business correspondence.
3. Folders and binders can be used again once old projects are completed. The cost of these items
adds up!
I appreciate your cooperation, and I hope these measures will lead to an improvement in this area
soon.

1. Why has Mr. Bauer written this memo?

(A) To ensure people are happy with their new office supplies
(B) To advise of new regulations that will save the company money
(C) To break the news that cuts will be made in many areas
(D) To thank people for saving the company so much money

2. How do people borrow supplies from now

(A) By clearing them with Dave Smith
(B) By getting a written order from their manager
(C) By signing them out with their own pens
(D) By special permission from Mr. Bauer

(B) For personal correspondence

PART 7C
Questions 1-5 refer to the following advertisement and letter.

If you are the kind of person who just can 't seem to lose weight no matter what you do, don't
give up. There's still hope. You need to try the Caraway Diet. The Caraway Diet is the creation
of Janet Caraway. She once weighed 200 pounds, but she finally got tired of being overweight
and having people making fun of her. Janet studied nutrition, and then she came up with her
own diet. Thanks to that diet, she lost 10 pounds in the first month, and she eventually got her
weight down to the 110 pounds that she currently weighs. The Caraway Diet is approved by
doctors and is completely safe. You don 't have to take lots of exotic vitamins, and you don't

19
have to do rigorous exercise every day. Just follow the diet, don't eat any junk food, engage in
twenty to thirty minutes of light exercise a day, and watch the pounds come off. It's the perfect
diet for people who are on the go and don't have time to join a gym. You're guaranteed to lose
5 pounds a month. If you don't lose that much in the first month, we'll refund your money in
full. Call now to sign up for the Caraway Diet. You 'Il be glad you did!

Dear Better Business Bureau:

I would like to report the Caraway Diet for fraudulent advertising. The Caraway Diet promises
its members that if they don't lose a certain amount of weight after the first month of
membership, then it will refund its client's money. I tried the Caraway Diet for two months and
failed to lose any weight; in fact, I gained two pounds. Unfortunately, when I requested a refund
of my money, my request was denied. I was not even given the benefit of a reason. The money
that I lost was minimal. I'm not particularly concerned about that. However, I don't like to see
advertisers lie about their product. That's why I'm writing you this letter. I would like for you to
conduct an investigation of the Caraway Diet, or, if that is not possible, at least to keep this letter
on file so that others interested in the Caraway Diet will not be fooled like I was.

Sincerely,
Nancy Roberts

Questions 1-5 refer to the following news report and letter to the editor.

Over the past ten years, conditions in the inner city have continued to decline. As more and
more families move to the suburbs, those who remain in the city find their job prospects and
standards of living decreasing. Salaries are less than half of those in the suburbs. Crime in the
city is also increasing, and property values have plummeted.

But there are some people who are trying to change life in the inner city. Peter Marcus is one
of them. A former professional football player, when Marcus retired from the game twenty-five
years ago, he didn't take his millions and go live in some posh neighborhood. Instead, he moved
back to his old neighborhood and opened a youth center on 33rd Street. The Marcus Youth
Center has been a shining light for the neighborhood, helping keep youths off the streets and
away from gangs and drugs that ruin their lives. Marcus has lost count of the number of times
young men and women have thanked him for giving them something to do after they finished
school and for keeping them out of trouble.

But all is not going well for the Marcus Youth Center these days. Marcus himself is running
out of personal funds, having invested most of his life's savings into the center. As a non-profit
organization, the center relies upon donations to survive. But these donations aren't coming in.
Without some kind of financial backing, the Marcus Youth Center will be forced to close its
doors by the end of the month.

To the editor:
I read your recent article on Peter Marcus and the Marcus Youth Center and was very impressed
with Mr. Marcus. It's so nice to see that some successful people haven't forgotten about their
roots and that they still care enough to come back to their old neighborhoods and try to help

21
others be like them. I was also rather distressed to see that the Marcus Youth Center is in danger
of closing its doors due to a lack of funds.
That's why I'm writing this letter. I would like to announce that I have personally donated
$300,000 to the Marcus Youth Center. I too come from the inner city, and I had the opportunity
to spend some time in the Marcus Youth Center. My activities there helped me become the man
I am today. I worked hard and managed to make my business one of the leaders in the city. I
can't stand the thought of the youth center closing its doors.
And now I'd like to issue a challenge to others in the city. Let's keep the Marcus Youth Center
in business. Donate what you can, and see if your company will match your donations. I'm living
proof that the center is doing good work. Without the center, I definitely wouldn't be where I
am today.

Sincerely,
William Jefferson
President, ECM, Inc.

1. What did Peter Marcus do in the past?

(A) He ran a youth center.
(B) He played sports professionally.

(A) The crime rate in the suburbs is higher.
(B) Those living in the suburbs have less valuable housing.
(C) There are more jobs in the suburbs.
(D) Salaries in the inner city are greater.

3. Why is William Jefferson interested in the Marcus Youth Center?

(A) He wants to become its president.
(B) He used to go there when he was a child.
(C) He wants children in the suburbs to have a place to go.
(D) He thinks the center helps produce the leaders of tomorrow.

4. What does William Jefferson request that others do?

(A) Give as much money as they can
(B) Donate more money than him
(C) Volunteer to work at the center

22
(D) Ask their company to donate more money

5. Why does the Marcus Youth Center require funding?

(A) It has to pay extra taxes and rent.
(B) It wasted all of the money it had before.
(C) It had bad financial management in the past.
(D) Its owner lacks the personal funds.

Dear Ms. Rosas,

I thank you for your cooperation, it will truly help us to have a great and successful conference
this coming November. However, there are several questions that I wanted to ask you. I was
wondering if the Wise Conference Center has any fitness room, swimming pool, or spa etc., for
us to enjoy, how big the cafeteria is, how many people are sharing one room, and if there are any
nice parks for families to enjoy. Also, I have a few disabled people that will be coming to our
conference, and I was wondering if your conference center has adequate facilities for those people
so that they are as comfortable as possible. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
