10 Help! Name:

The Island Twenty-First Century Skills Critical Thinking and Collaboration

1 Work in pairs. Read the text below. Then choose five things to help you on your island.
You were on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Suddenly, there was a terrible storm with a strong wind.
Your boat hit a big rock and broke into many pieces. Now, you and your partner are together on a
small island. There aren’t any other people on this island. There’s a stream and there are some fruit trees.
There are a lot of fish in the ocean. What things do you need to help you live on your island? Discuss
these questions together:
• How will you spend your time? • What will you do if you’re too cold or too hot?
• How will you find and prepare food? • Will you try to make another boat?
• Where will you stay?
You can choose only five things from the items below to help you on your island. What will you choose? Why?

some rope a compass some matches a flashlight

a first aid kit a knife a water bottle a pot

a whistle a blanket a mirror a notebook

2 Work with another pair of students. Tell them what you chose and why.
