Overview of storage devices

1 Overview of storage devices

The change of storage devices is related to the following units:

WDU hard disk unit

FDU removable disk unit (floppy disk or magneto-optical disk)

CTU cartridge tape unit

The instructions given for replacing adapters and cables connected to the storage
devices are examples, and when performing these procedures, you have to
modify the examples to suit your situation, for example, by giving the correct
index number.

1.1 Replacement of WDUs

Hard disks and Magneto-Optical (MO) disks function as the storages of the
software (SW) system. They restore the information of the system in case of a
restart.

The Operation and Maintenance Unit (OMU) always contains two hard disks,
and there are hard disks in STU and ACU as well.

Hard disks do not need periodic maintenance, they need to be serviced only in
failure situations.

The hard disk unit is equipped to storage devices at cartridge (M92, DXT256), or
to computer cartridge (M98, DXTip) using an appropriate adapter which can be
changed with the unit at the same time. The adapter is used only in cartridge
construction, not in subrack construction.

Hard disk units (WDUs) of the system are used to store, for example, the
following data:

dn03430759 # Nokia Corporation 9 (44)

Issue 2-1 en Nokia Proprietary and Confidential
Replacing Storage Devices

. program codes and loadable files of the computer units

. MML programs
. menus
.
statistics and charging data
. safecopies of software builds
.
databases
. alarm and recovery files

Before replacing the WDU, stop all activities on the Small Computer System
Interface (SCSI ) bus where you make the changes.

For safety reasons, the hard disk units are always backed up. They are called
system disk unit and backup unit. Normally, the data in the units is identical, and
the system writes to both units. The system disk unit is read first, while the
backup unit is read only if reading from the system disk unit fails.

When a failure occurs in a hard disk unit, the I/O system blocks the faulty unit
from use. If the faulty unit is active, the backup unit becomes the system disk
unit.

Formatting and initialising a new hard disk unit is slow. Therefore, keep a new
hard disk unit that is already formatted and initialised as a spare unit. If this is not
the case, the disk unit should be changed, whenever possible, when it is not being
used by the system (for example, during night hours). Even if the hard disk is
already initialised, it is still recommended that the change is done during a low
traffic period.

Note

Verify that an approximately two-hour break is possible in disk operations. The

duration of the break depends on the amount of data to be copied, the version of
the software build, and the hardware. If the disk is not initialised, the duration
also depends on the capacity of the disk.

Terminal resistor

In SCSIF environment, the terminal resistor is not allowed on the disk.

Nokia Proprietary and Confidential Issue 2-1 en
Overview of storage devices

Bad blocks

You should always have an initialised spare WDU at your disposal. The spare
unit can be initialised, for example, in the test laboratory before it is installed in
the actual unit.

The maximum amount of bad blocks of a WDU is shown in Table Maximum

amount of bad blocks. The Primary list (P-list) shows the bad blocks detected
already in the disk factory. You can fetch the P-list with, for example, the Service
Terminal MAS-command BLP. The Grown list (G-list) shows the bad blocks
detected in use. You can fetch the G-list with, for example, the Service Terminal
MAS-command BLG.

Table 1. Maximum amount of bad blocks

Disk P-list max. G-list max. G-list max. Note

9 GB 1000 20 4

18 GB 1500 30 6

36 GB 1500 30 6

73 GB 1500 30 6

You can also use the IWB MML command to output the bad block lists.

Hard disk (HDPU-A)

When you push the push button on the HDPU-A front panel for two seconds,
then the input supply voltage of the HDPU-A is cut off and the red LED lights up
(this button is only for cutting off input supply voltage; it does not switch power
on).

Power on: the input supply voltage connects to the HDPU-A, the cartridge's
power supply plug-in unit turns off and then turn on again.

If it is not possible to turn the power off (cartridge), then the HDPU-A is taken
out from the powered cartridge and then inserted again into it.

The red LED also lights on if the fuse of the input supply voltage (+5 V DC) is
blown or the supply voltage +12 V DC is missing.

Replacing Storage Devices

1.2 Replacement of CTUs and FDUs

The Cartridge Tape Unit (CTU) is used for backup copying a network element
(for example, software) and for storing network element data (for example,
charging data). The CTU is a Digital Audio Tape (DAT) recorder.

The adapter is used only in cartridge construction, not in subrack construction.

The CTU and the removable disk unit (FDU) are equipped to storage devices at
cartridge (M92, DXT256) or to computer cartridge (M98, DXTip) using an
appropriate adapter which can be changed with the unit at the same time.

Note

The CTU is in use only in M92 and DXT256.

Before replacing the disk unit, stop all activities on the SCSI bus where you are
making changes.

1.3 Replacement of MOs

Note

In the instructions for Replacing Storage Devices, the MO unit is referred to as an

FDU.

The MOs are connected to adapters which can be changed with the unit at the
same time. The adapter is used only in cartridge construction, not in subrack
construction.

Before replacing the disk unit, stop all activities on the SCSI bus where you are
making changes.

For more information, see Replacing a removable disk unit (FDU).

Preventing and resuming updates of disks and memory file disk copies

2 Preventing and resuming updates of

disks and memory file disk copies
To make sure that no data is lost when changing disks, first prevent disk updates,
and updates of memory file disk copies (Database Handling, DB Command
Group and Disk Update Handling, DU Command Group ). After the change is
completed, you can resume them.

For general information on storage devices, see Overview of storage devices.

2.1 Preventing updates of disks and memory file disk

copies
To make sure that no data is lost when changing disks, prevent disk updates and
the updates of memory file disk copies first before changing them.

Note

If the other disk is broken, you cannot prevent the updates of memory file disk
copies by giving the DUP command. Start from step List the databases (DBL).

Steps

1. Prevent the updates of memory file disk copies (DUP)

If you change the disk of ACU, you only need to prevent updates of the
unit in which the replaced disk exists. In case of an OMU disk change,
prevent all disk updates.

ZDUP:<unit>;

2. List the databases (DBL)

3 Formatting a hard disk unit (WDU)

The WDU is always equipped to cartridge by using an appropriate adapter. When
you change the WDU, you can change the adapter at the same time. For more
information on adapters, see Replacing terminators and cables.

This section shows how to format and initialise a WDU.

Keep a formatted spare unit at your disposal so that it can be changed if one of the
WDUs becomes faulty.

Formatting a spare WDU includes:

1. removing a WDU from the exchange

2. replacing it with a spare WDU
3. formatting the spare WDU
4. removing the formatted WDU
5. putting back the original WDU

Before you start

Before replacing the WDU, stop all activities on the SCSI bus where you are
making changes.

Note

Keep an initialised WDU at your disposal. This speeds up the maintenance task.

For general information on storage devices, see Overview of storage devices.
