Introduction
The purpose of this report is to inform the people who are interested in mechanical design
or the people who need to use mechanical design. I will talk about what mechanical design
is, when and how it is used.

[1]

What is Mechanical design?

Mechanical design is to design parts, components, products, or systems of mechanical

nature. For example, designs of various machine elements such
as shafts, bearings, clutches, gears, and fasteners fall into the scope of mechanical
design.Numerous criteria have been proposed in mechanical design processes, some
primary design criteria include functions, safety, reliability, manufacturability, weight, size,
wear, maintenance, and liability. In general, a mechanical design problem should be
formulated with clear and complete statements of functions, specifications, and
evaluation criteria:

Functions are specified for what a product can fulfill. Functions are usually described by
nonquantitative statements. Exemplifying product functions are to charge power on
electronics (charger), clean floors (vacuum), transport objects (mobile platform), or support
loads (structure). [2]

Specifications are detailed requirements described by quantitative statements. For example,

product specifications can be defined in terms of size, weight, precision, working volume,
speed, or load capacity. Specifications turn into design constraints in problem-solving
processes. [3]

Evaluation criteria are the statements of desirable qualitative characteristics. Evaluation

criteria are treated as design objectives to optimize the solutions in problem-solving
processes. Evaluation criteria are set to maximize benefits and minimize disadvantages of
mechanical designs. [4]

[5]
Mechanical Design is the transformation of abstract fiction created with ideas and dreams
into concrete fiction. In addition to legal frameworks such as boundary conditions,
standards, regulations and patents; It arises with data from physics, chemistry and
mathematics. [6]
The product, which is perfect in terms of industrial design but not good in terms of
mechanical design , can give you what you want when you look at it but it cannot give you
what you want to do with it. For instence, what you want with a glass is to drink something.
If you can’t use it to drink something, it won’t work no matter how beautiful. Mechanical
design provides support at that time. Mechanical design makes it useful. Mechanical design
ensures that the class can carry water. Of course it was a so simple example. Mechanical
design does it in all fields. Mechanical design exists everywhere that includes products. And
it must be.

[7]

Where, When and How It Is Used

Mechanical Design is a process of developing a system, component or process within
manufacturable limits to meet the desired needs. Mechanical Designers create machines,
products and new technologies. This process takes place with the support of CAD software.
Mechanical designers need to have knowledge about production, quality and standards
depending on the industry and products for which they are designed. Information such as
simple limit tolerance techniques or geometric dimensioning and tolerance (GD&T) may be
required.[8]
Some of the biggest industries using mechanical design are: Aerospace and automotive. The
product, which needs continuous mechanical design and development, is successful in
industrial design but cannot support the necessary criteria in mechanical design, is only
visually effective. At the same time, it is the study of reflecting the pre-planned scenarios to
the product in order to pass the production method, working logic, assembly conditions,
possible tests and verifications. Mechanical design contains the most basic dynamics of
mechanical engineering. It is an interdisciplinary subject of study including force, materials,
machine elements, mechanism technique, kinematics and sciences. While doing mechanical
design, simulation and analysis studies are carried out in order to predict the problems
without production. This work is called "virtual prototyping". The conditions under which the
product / system will work is prepared as a scenario in the simulation program and a virtual
test is run. [9]

[10]

The Advantages of Mechanical Design

*With a good knowledge of materials and mechanism technique, the design of moving,
interlocking and working systems can be designed easily.[11]

*Mechanical design is easy to do as long as the production method is known.[12]

*The working performance of the design to be made with simulation and kinematic analysis
under real conditions can be examined in computer environment and necessary revisions
can be made quickly.[13]

*In addition, it has the opportunity to examine the mechanical design, the load it will be
exposed to during its working life and the necessary efforts in the computer environment.
[14]

*It has the advantage of working with different material types.[15]
