Rakshabandan

BY TARUN Dhanpal

Rakshabandhan is a hindu festival that celebrates the bond between

siblings and families, often called Brother and Sister Day. Translated
from Sanskrit, the word Raksha means “protection” & Bandhan meaning
“ bond”. Hence the festival celebrates the bond of love and protection.

Raksha Bandhan is observed on the last day of the Hindu lunar

calendar month of Shraavana, which typically falls in August.

On this day, sisters typically tie an amulet or talisman called “Rakhi” on

their brothers wrist. This symbolically offers them their protection for
which in return they receive a gift as a token of love and respect.

The festival has grown beyond its traditional boundaries, with people
from diverse backgrounds and religions embracing its message of love
and protection. It has become a symbol of unity and harmony, promoting
understanding and cooperation among different communities.
Raksha bandhan is a very special day in my house. I look forward for
my sister to tie a beautiful colourful rakhi on my wrist which I flaunt
with great pride. My mother prepares delicious sweets on the day for us
to share and enjoy. We renew our promise to always love and
unconditionally support each other.
