General This steering gear is so arranged that in the event of the loss of hydraulic fluid from one system, the loss can be detected and the defective system is auto- matically isolated and another system shail remain fully operational within 45 seconds. 2. Construction This system comprises a standard 1-ram, 2-cylinders steering gear with two power units and following equipments ; 1) 4- Isolating valves 2) 2- Level switches having chamber and test device with "Low" & “Low-Low" level positions. 3) Electric control panel for automatic isolation system. 4) Alarm function for automatic isolation system in the alarm panel. 3. Operation 1) FAILURE MODE OPERATIONAL SEQUENCE IN ONE POWER UNIT RUNNING. If the loss of oil occurs in case of No.1 power unit running and No.2 power unit stopped, the following sequence will take place. a) When the oil level in No.1 power unit goes down to “Low” position, audible and visual alarms are given in wheel house and in engine control room. b) At the same time isolating valvea (IV-3 and IV-4) are automatically energized and the hydraulic system associated with No.2 power unit (System II) is isolated. ) If the oil loss occurs in the hydraulic system associated with No.2 power unit (System Il), steering is being carried out by No.1 power unit (System |). d) On the other hand, ifthe oil loss occurs in the hydraulic system associated with No.1 power unit, the oil oil level in No.1 power unit goes down to “Low-Low" position then isolating valves (IV-3 & IV-4) are automatically de-energized and No.1 power unit is automatically stopped. Also the isolating vaives (IV-1 & IV-2) are automatically energized and No.2 power unit is automatically started, Steering gear is now being carried out by No.2 power unit (System Il). If No.2 power unit running and No.1 power unit stopped, No.1 and No.2 of power unit, | and Il of system, IV-1 & IV-2 and IV-3 & IV-4 of isolating valves are replaced in the above sequence, 21 2) FAILURE MODE OPERATIONAL SEQUENCE IN BOTH POWER UNITS RUNNING. a) When the oil level in No.1 power unit firstly goes down to "Low" position, audible and visual alarms are given in wheel house and in engine control room. b) At the same time isolating valve (IV-3 and IV-4) are automatically energized and No.2 power unit is automatically stopped. If the oil level in No.2 power unit firstly goes down to "Low" position, No.1 and No.2 of power units, | and Il of system, IV-1 / IV-2 and IV-3/ IV-4 of isolating valves are replaced in above sequence. 3) In case one power unit is running (if No.1 power unit), if the low alarm in oil tank of the stand-by power unit (NO.2 power unit) is activated, at the same time isolating valves (IV-1 & IV-2) of running side are automatically energized and the power unit (No.1) is automatically stopped. Therefore hydraulic system associated with No.1 power unit is isolated. And then No.2 power unitis automatically started. Steering gear is now being carried out by No.2 power u 4) In case one power unit is running (if No.2 power unit), if the low alarm in oil tank of the stand-by power unit (NO.1 power unit) is activated, at the same time isolating valves (IV-3 & IV-4) of running side are automatically energized and the power unit (No.2) is automatically stopped.
