Abstract

This research paper explores the evolution and impact of Automatic Flight Control Systems (AFCS)
in aviation safety and efficiency. Tracing the historical development of AFCS, the study emphasizes
its crucial role in automating vital flight parameters, including attitude, altitude, and heading control.
Key components like sensors, actuators, and advanced avionics are analysed for their contributions to
system functionality.
The paper examines diverse AFCS modes, such as altitude and heading hold, and autopilot
functionalities. Integration of advanced technologies like Inertial Navigation Systems, Global
Positioning Systems, and air data computers is discussed, highlighting their role in real-time data
acquisition and precise control.
Additionally, the research delves into advanced features within modern AFCS, including envelope
protection, turbulence damping, and Autoland capabilities, showcasing their pivotal contribution to
overall flight safety. Real-world case studies underscore instances where AFCS mitigated risks and
reduced pilot workload.
The discussion extends to challenges and prospects, emphasizing AFCS's role in shaping autonomous
and semi-autonomous aviation systems. This paper offers a concise yet comprehensive understanding
of how AFCS continues to revolutionize aviation, ensuring safer and more efficient global air travel.
