Course Description:
This course introduces computer concepts, including fundamental functions and operations of the
computer. Topics include identification of hardware components, basic computer operations, security issues,
and use of software applications. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding
of the role and function of computers and use the computer to solve problems. As well as MS Windows.
Word processing, (Microsoft Word), spreadsheet analysis.

Learning objectives:
Knowing the importance of information technology, this course is designed to let the students know
about the workings and applications of computers in biological sciences. In this course, students will
understand the basic principles on which a computer works and will familiarize themselves with some of the
important software components found on a PC. Another main objective of this course is to familiarize the
students with word processing, spreadsheet analysis, and the use of computers to retrieve and communicate
information.

Learning outcomes:
Upon completing requirements for this course, the student will be able to:
1. Know about computer hardware, software, and other computer applications used for business.
2. Demonstrate their computing skills like the use of word processors, making presentations, using
spreadsheets, using the internet for browsing/surfing and emailing, etc.
3. Illustrate the role of the computer for personal and professional uses.
Class Format:
Introduction to Computer/MS Office is a lecture-discussion and practical class. Typically, each class
will begin with an open discussion on a related subject and the weekly readings and practices. That class
discussion will be followed by a lecture on the assigned subject matter for the week, interspersed with
classroom discussion/seminar-style dialogue and case studies. The class may occasionally employ
conversations and all students should respond to questions from other students or teachers on their practical

Method of Evaluation:
The grading procedure for this course is designed to encourage everyone to gain an understanding of
both the theoretical and practical dimensions of basic Computer knowledge and MS- Office as well as
reflected in the readings and class participation for each week. The allocation of grades will be as follows:

 Class participation//Assignments 10 Marks


 Class Attendance 10 Marks
 Mid Term Test 30 Marks
 Final Test 50 Marks
 Total 100 Marks

Additional requirements for class/group presentation:

During class, there will be frequent opportunities to contribute to class discussion. Furthermore,
three classes have been allocated for presentations and you will present your topics and time will be given
TEN minutes to make your presentation and FIVE minutes for Q&A. Directions on content and format will
be provided in class.
