CAVITY PREPARATION (COMPOSITE)

Initial prep:
1. Initial depth and outline form
2. Primary resistance form
3. Primary retention form
4. Convenience form
Final prep:
1. Removal of any remaining infected dentin
2. Pulp protection
3. Secondary resistance and retention form
4. Procedures for finishing walls
5. Final procedure: cleaning, inspecting and sealing

Direct veneers technique procedure

Ø Cleaning of teeth which are to be veneered
Ø Selection of the shade
Ø Isolation of teeth with cotton roll or rubber dam
Ø Removal of the defect and tooth preparation. Preparation should extend on
some sound enamel.
Ø Application of composite as usual, i.e. first acid etching and then
application of primer and bonding agent followed by placement of
composite

Direct full veneers procedure

Ø Cleaning of the teeth
Ø Selection of the shade
Ø Tooth isolation and retraction of gingiva using retraction cords
Ø Reduction of tooth using coarse round end diamond bur
Ø Acid etching, washing and drying followed by application of bonding agent
Ø Placement of composite in increments.

Four types of prep for direct full veneers

Ø Incisal bevel
Ø Overlap incisal edge
Ø Window preparation
Ø Feather preparation

Shade selection checklist

Ø Remove bright color from the working field.
Ø Always clean the tooth by using prophylaxis.
Ø View the shade comparison for not more than 5-7s to avoid eye fatigue.
Ø Should be at distance of 28-33cm from the patient during shade selection.
Ø Determine shade when the teeth are most hydrated, because enamel
dehydration reduces its translucency by 82%, misleading the clinician.
History taking
Ø Dietary habits of patient
Ø Occupation of patient
Ø General health of patient
Ø Brushing habits
Ø Abnormal habits

Failures of composite of resin restoration

Ø Incomplete caries excavation
Ø Incomplete etching or failure to remove residual acid from enamel tags
Ø Improper bonding
Ø Isolation failures
Ø Bulk placements
