Quality of Mercy – The Blind Boy

William Shakespeare - Colley Cibber

The quality of mercy is not strain’d; O say what is that thing call’d light,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Which I must ne’er enjoy.
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest: What are the blessings of the sight,
It blesseth him that gives, and him that takes. O tell your poor blind boy!
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
You talk of wondrous things you see,
The throned monarch better than his crown. You say the sun shines bright;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power, I feel him warm, but how can he
The attribute to awe and majesty, Or make it day or night?
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway; My day or night myself I make,
When’ver I sleep or play;

20
It is enthroned in the heart of kings; And could I ever keep awake
It is an attribute to God himself; With me ‘twere always day.
And earthly power doth then show likest God’s
When mercy seasons justice. With heavy sighs I often hear
You mourn my hapless woe;
But sure with patience I can bear
A loss I ne’er can know.

Then let not what I cannot have

My cheer of mind destroy :
Whilst thus I sing, I am a king,
Although a poor blind boy.

XI. 35. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow : 1 x 4 =4 (2 x 2)
Dolphins are regarded as the friendliest creatures in the sea and stories of them helping drowning sailors have
been common since Roman times. The more we learn about dolphins, the more we realize that their society is
more complex than people previously imagined. They look after other dolphins when they are ill, care for
pregnant mothers and protect the weakest in the community, as we do. Some scientists have suggested that
dolphins have a language but it is much more probable that they communicate with each other without needing
words. Could any of these mammals be more intelligent than man? Certainly the most common argument in
favor of man's superiority over them that we can kill them more easily than they can kill us is the least
satisfactory. On the contrary, the more we discover about these remarkable creatures, the less we appear
superior when we destroy them.

Grandma climbs a tree is a beautiful poem written by Ruskin Bond. In this poem, here the poet himself is the
writer and the speaker. The poet calls his grandmother as genius and her habits as unusual because she could
climb the trees at her age of 62. She got this gift from her brother at the age of six. She felt very happy in tree
than in a lift. Many years passed away. Granny’s well wishers and the family members suggested her to stop
climbing trees because she had to grow old spiritually. But granny did not agree, she said that she would lead
the disgraceful life. Finally the family members kept quite. But they were all afraid that one day granny would
fall from the tree terribly. But One day all the family members went to the town, granny climbed the tree but
could not come down. Finally, all the family members rescued her. They sent for the doctor, the doctor took
her temperature and strongly recommended a week bed rest. The family members felt relief, but granny was
not happy. She felt like a brief season in the hell. After a week granny felt little stronger, then she called her
son and told him that, she wanted a tree top house. Her son understood the desire of his mother and agreed to
build the tree-top house. Soon, Ruskin Bond and
his father built a tree-top house for granny. Finally, granny moved up the tree house and spent her days
drinking sherry with her grandson. Thus, the poet’s grandmother has the unusual habit.
