Problem 1:
A soil weighs is 2,000 lb/cu yd (1187 kg/m3) loose and
2,500 1lb/cu yd (1483 kg/ m3) in- place. Find the swell
and load factor for the soil.

answer :

Swell % =( 1) 100 = 24.9 % 25 %

Load factor =( ) = 0.8

.

Problem 2:
A project requires that 100,000 BCY (76 460 BCM)
of the soil the swell = 25% and shrinkage =
15%excavated, hauled, and compacted in a fill. How
many loose cubic yards (meters) must be hauled. How
many compacted cubic yards (meters) of fill will the
excavation yield.
answer :
Loose volume (LCM) =Bank volume(BCM) x ( 1 + swe )
Loose volume (LCM) = 76460 x ( 1+ ) = 95575 LCM
volume (CCM) = Bank volume(BCM) x ( 1 shrinkage)
volume (CCM) =76460 x ( 1 0.15) = 64991 CCM

Problem 3:

A ditch having a cross-sectional area of 100 sq ft (9.3 m2) is being

excavated in clay. Find the height and width of the spoil bank which
will result. The soil’s angle of repose is 35 and its swell is 40%.

answer :

Volume = cross section x length assume length = 1 meter

Volume = 9.3 x 1 m = 9.3

.
B=( ) = 8.86 m
( )
. ( )
H=( ) = 2.09 m
