Installing the RFU-P 5

Introduction 5

In 1 + 0 configuration, the RFU can be:

— plugged directly into the antenna,
— connected to the antenna by means of a BRU (one MK-S
and one waveguide).

In protected configuration, the RFU can be:

— installed directly on each of the antennas,
— connected to an antenna by means of a BRU (one MK-D,
one MK-A and one waveguide),
— connected to 2 antennas by means of two BRUs (two MK-S,
two MK-A and two waveguides).

The MK-S is used to support and connect an RFU to the antenna

connection guide.

The MK-D is used to support and connect two RFU to the antenna
connection guide (through a coupler).
The MK-A is used to connect the waveguide to a circular
hyperfrequency access antenna.

Installing the RFU-P

Installing the antenna 5

The antennas are delivered with a fastening set for attachment to

the mast as well as an installation guide.
Table 5-1 indicates the different types of antenna used for each
frequency band.

60 X X X X
90 X X X X
120 X X X X X
180 X X X

The grey boxes in the table indicate the cases where the antennas
supplied include an option whereby the RFU may be mounted at
the end of the feed.

The boxes left unshaded in the table indicate the cases where it is
essential to remote the RFU.

Up to 90 cm, antennas can be installed on a 88,9 mm and 114 mm

diameter mast. 120 cm, 180 cm and 240 cm antennas can be
installed on a114 mm diameter mast only.

Appendix E gives details concerning 1.2 m antennas and upper

sizes, as well as installation configuration examples.

Installing the RFU-P

At 13, 15, 23 and 26 GHz, up to 120 cm, the presence of the RFU
or MK-A enables the vertical or horizontal polarisation of the link to
be determined.

A 7 GHz, the vertical or horizontal polarisation of the link is

determined by the position of the feed in the antenna (the feed
must be turned through 90° to change polarisation).

Installing the RFU 5

General 5

The RFU is secured to the antenna, MKS or MKD using

4 snap-fasteners (Figure 5-1).

The RFU is fitted with N and BNC connectors.

- Position the RFU according to the polarisation required:

polarisation is indicated by the position of the handle
(Figure 5-3).
- Secure the RFU by closing the four snap-fasteners
(2 diagonal pairs).

Securing the MK-S and MK-D 5

The same procedure is used to mount the MK-S and the MK-D.

The MK-S and the MK-D can be secured:

■ to a mast using U-bolts and the nuts provided (Figure 5-6),
■ on a wall using 8 mm diameter attachments which depend
on the housing structure and can support up to 25 kg.

Securing the RFU to the MK-S/MK-D 5

The position of the RFU on the MK-S or on the MK-D is fixed (the
MK-S and the MK-D are fitted with guide pins).

NOTE:
The 2 locating screws are on the 2 mounting lugs of the first
diagonal pair (Figure 5-7).

- Remove the protections on the circular access of MK-D or

MK-S.
- Position the RFU handle in a vertical position.

9595 320 05062 June 2001 5-9

Installing the RFU-P

- Secure the RFU to the MK-S (or the RFU to the MK-D) by
closing the 4 snap-fasteners: 2 diagonal pairs.

Securing the MK-A to the antenna (13, 15,

23 and 26 GHz) 5

The MK-A is only used on circular access antennas.

The MK-A is secured directly to the antenna and the polarisation is

determined by the position of the MK-A (Figure 5-8).
- Secure the MK-A to the antenna using the 2 snap-fasteners,
retaining the correct polarisation: ensure that the arrow on
the MK-A matches up with the H (Horizontal) marker or the
V (Vertical) marker on the antenna (Figure 5-8).

antennas (7 GHz) 5
At 7 GHz, polarisation is determined by the feed position on the
antenna (Figure 5-9).
- remove the 4 fastening screws from the guide (1),
- Rotate 90o anticlockwise (2),
- attach the feed in its new position (3).

Installing the RFU-P

Installing the waveguide 5

(see Figure 5-10 and Figure 5-11)

The type of waveguide used depends on the distance between the

antenna and the RFU:
■ 1m twistable flexible guide used on all frequencies,
■ 5m elliptical guide equipped with a desiccant and used for
intermediary extensions for frequencies 13, 15, 23 and
26 GHz. For distances over 5m, the length of the eliptical
guide to be used for these frequencies is defined on the site
(sold by the metre),
■ at 7 GHz, twistable flexible guide + elliptical guide with
desiccant for a remote antenna further than one meter
away.

NOTE:
At 7 GHz, for remote distances over 10 m, indoor mounting
is advised.

Connect the waveguide to the MK-A or directly to the antenna on

one end and to the MK-S (or the MK-D) on the other end, using the
screws and the O-rings provided.

! CAUTION:
Ensure that the rectangular shape of the MK-A, MK-S and
MK-D corresponds with that of the interior of the waveguide.

- When elliptical waveguide is used, place the desiccant on

the RFU side.
