6. Let A = “Aldo is Italian” and B = “Bob is English”. Formalize the following
sentences:
i). “Aldo isn’t Italian”
ii) “Aldo is Italian while Bob is English”
iii) “If Aldo is Italian then Bob is not English”
iv) “Aldo is Italian or if Aldo isn’t Italian then Bob is English”
v) “Either Aldo is Italian and Bob is English, or neither Aldo is Italian nor Bob is
English”

7. Let’s consider a propositional language where p means “Paola is happy”, q means


“Paola paints a picture”, r means “Renzo is happy”. Formalize the following
sentences:
i). “If Paola is happy and paints a picture then Renzo isn’t happy”
ii) “If Paola is happy, then she paints a picture”
iii) “Paola is not happy because she did not paint a picture”

8. Let p stand for the proposition “I bought a lottery ticket” and q for “I won the
jackpot”. Express the following as natural English sentences:

(c) p ∧ q
(d) p ⇒ q
(e) ¬p ⇒ ¬q
(f) ¬p ∨ (p ∧ q)
9. Let r=” rabbits are seen in this area”, b=” berries are ripe along the path” and w=”
walking on the path is safe”. Express the following English sentences in
propositional logic
a) Berries are ripe along the path, but rabbits have not been seen in the area.
b) If berries are ripe along the path, then walking is safe if and only if rabbits have
not been seen in the area.
c) Walking is not safe on the path whenever rabbits have been seen in the area and
berries are ripe along the path.
