    In early 1925, there was a diphtheria epidemic affecting children in an Alaskan village. Antitoxin was urgently needed from Anchorage, 1609 kilometers away, but the seas were frozen and air transport was not possible. It was decided to transport the antitoxin by train from Anchorage to Nenana, and then by dog sled the remaining 1000 kilometers to Nome, with many dogs participating, including Balto. Balto and the others delivered the antitoxin successfully, saving many lives and becoming celebrated as heroes.

    Balto’s hero

    A long time ago, at the beginning of 1925, In Alaska was a


    diphtheria epidemic, this illness affects the underage children of ten
    years old, that it had found in a village. Immediately It had required
    diphtheria antitoxin in all hospitals, for telegram the authorities
    noticed that it had some reserves in the city of Anchorage, that it
    was 1609 kilometers of there. In the face of the difficulty of travel
    the large distance for the translation of the serum, it couldn’t carry
    the antitoxin in boat because the seas were froze and nor could
    carry it for air via, and so they planned to transfer the antitoxin on
    railway since Anchorage to Nenana and since there carry the
    medicines in sledge pulled by dogs to Nome running 1000
    kilometers. Participated many dogs, between them it was Balto. The
    press had been excited with this history, and it did to Balto, the new
    hero of the nation.
