Introduction

Edward House was one of the popular spots of the metropolitan back in the early decades of the 19th
century.

Edward House is a building which is located in the Civil Lines area of Karachi, Pakistan. It was
architectural design; by the Iraqi-Jewish architect Moses Somake in 1910,and named after Somake's son,
Ellis Edward.

Architect/ Architecture And Art of Building and its purpose.

.It is a double-storey structure which is constructed using strong detailing and rusticated masonry.
Edward House design is of hybrid nature and has strong stone detailing and rusticated masonry.

Edward House is made of local Gizri sandstone and limestone, with ornamental molds.Adjoining, there is
another mansion known as Victoria Mansion, which may have also been designed by Samoke given the
similarity in style - although no records exist recording his work there.

The structure has fine massing, striking balcony like projections and a striking central tower. It is more
than apparent that Edward House is affected by the dissonance that you expect to experience on the
main road on one of whose sides this lovely work of stonemasonry stands. The irony is that despite the
rather defaced walls, its wooden staircase, the flooring, the fairly spacious rooms and the doors that for
sure open into a time zone when life did not move faster than the speed of light, make you feel affection
for this almost a century old piece of construction.

Purpose

The Cafe Grand, that was located on the ground floor of the building, was run by confectioner Herbert
Cumper and served delectable menu in a ritzy, jazzy venue. The Cafe Grand was visited by Karachi’s
most famous artists and writers. These days the building houses ‘Stars Club’ on the ground floor, an
architect’s office, a photocopier shop, and few residential blocks.
