One of the challenges of the PLS-5 Auditory Comprehension is the switching back and forth between the items
that require toys or objects, and the items that involve the stimulus book. It can feel like a juggling act.
You may want to run through the items that involve the toys all at once, then the all the items that involve
the stimulus book. You can take breaks anytime.
On the following page, here is a script* that you can use to do the Toy items 25, 26, 27- 29, 32, 33, 37, 39 and
41. Item 27-29 are usually the starting point for ages 3:0 to 3:5, but if you need the child to warm-up by giving
some easier items, start with item 25
(Then get the stimulus book out and do the Book items 30, 31, 34, 35, 36, 38, 40, 42 and beyond)
*This script is a condensed version of what’s in the Administration and Scoring Manual and on the Record
Form. It has cues for you, the toys you need, and your lines, for the toy items, all in one place. Whenever
you are asking the child to respond with an action, or respond to one of your questions, you will want to mark
what they do in the Record Form. For a full explanation of each item, refer to the Administration and Scoring
Manual.
You could put the script inside a sheet protector and tape it to the inside of the box lid.
For children who do not get a basal (3 in a row) starting at item 25, work backward with:
23. Show me/ Point to/ Where are your / Where are Mr. Bear’s nose….eyes…foot/feet….hands…mouth.
Gather the bear, spoon, cups, one bowl, the towel and the blue box with lid. Have the duck, pitcher,
crayons, the ball and blocks in the baggie handy.
SCRIPT
25.(Put the bear, spoon, 1 cup, 1 bowl and towel in front of the child)
27-29.(Clear the towel, bowl and spoon, bring out two more cups, the blue box and the blocks)
Mr. Bear wants to play hide and seek. He’s going to hide now.
(Put the bear in the blue box and put the lid on)
(Put aside the box and lay out the pitcher, two more cups)
We found Mr. Bear! Now let’s get something to drink. You pour.
Mr. Bear says he likes cold drinks. Here are some ice cubes. (Show the blocks, put them on the table)
Let’s drink.
32. (Put the cups and blocks aside and bring out the box, towel and duck. Put the ball in the box and place the
box with the lid on your lap so the child can see and touch the box. Put the bear on the table, cover him with
the towel)
This is Mrs. Duck and this is Mr. Bear. We’re going to play with them. Mr. Bear is sleeping. Let’s wake him
up.
33.(Put the duck, box, ball, towel aside, keep the bear out, get the blocks in the baggie and hold them out to
the child)
37. (Put the blocks away. Take out the crayons, scatter them on the table)
I’m going to put Mr. Bear on the table. Now I want you to put Mr. Bear…under the table (or chair)…in back
of you…next to you….in front of me.
Here are some crayons for you (put 6 in front of the child), and some for me (put 2 in front of you)
Who has more crayons? (gather the crayons, give the child 3 and yourself 5)
(Bring the bear back) Mr. Bear likes crayons too. I’ll give him some.
(redistribute the crayons so the child has 4, you have 2, and the bear has 2).
Congratulations! You made it through the toys! Get the stimulus book, and for 3 year olds, you can start at item 30, and
go through the stimulus book items without having to switch back and forth between the toys and the book.
