Folk Dance - A folk dance is a popular dance which is considered a part of the tradition or custom of a
particular group of people.
Creative Dances - This is an act of improvising or creating movements to interpret an idea, thoughts or
feelings.
Folk Dances of the Philippines
Cariñosa - is a traditional dance in the Philippines that portrays the shy behavior of a Filipina during courtship.
Maglalatik - It was originally performed in Binan, Laguna as a mock-war dance that demonstrates a fight
between the Moros and the Christians over prized latik or coconut meat during the Spanish rule.
Sayaw sa Banga - The Sayaw sa Banga or pot dance is a folk dance of Kalinga of the Mountain Province in
the Philippines.
Pandanggo sa Ilaw - The word pandanggo comes from the Spanish dance FANDANGO. This folk dance is
characterized by lively steps and clapping of hands. This famous dance of grace and balance originated from
Lubang Island, Mindoro.
Kinnotan - This folk dance is from the Ilocos region. It is a hilarious mime dance imitating someone bitten by
ants.
Itik-Itik - This folk dance imitates and matches the movement of an itik or duck. The dance steps involve short
and choppy steps while the itik calls for its mate. This dance has become famous in the areas of Samar and
Cebu.
Tinikling - This is a bamboo dance which imitates the movements of the tikling birds as they walk between
grass stems, run over tree branches or avoid bamboo traps set by rice farmers.
Sinulog - The Sinulog dance honors the Holy Sto. Niño or the Holy Infant Jesus. The annual Sinulog dance
festival is held every January in Cebu to celebrate the feast of the Sto. Niño.
Paunjalay - This is a pre-wedding dance of the Yakan tribe of Basilan. This dance is performed before the
wedding day. Both faces of the bride and the groom are dotted to hide their identity from the evil spirits.
Kandingan - This dance is performed in a Tausug wedding in Jolo, Sulu. The Kandingan consists of figures
and steps based on classical and traditional Indian dance forms.
Pangalay - It is a tradional fingernail dance of the Tausug, Badjao, Tawi-Tawi and Samal people of the Sulu
Archipelago which emphasizes flowing arm and hand movements.
Singkil - This is the famous dance of the Maranao people of the Lake Lanao. The name of the dance itself
means “to entangle the feet with disturbing objects a such as vines or anything in your path”.
