CSR225:DATA CENTERS

L:2 T:0 P:0 Credits:2

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: remember and explain the key components and regulations that ensure reliable and
efficient data centre operation.

CO2 :: understand , design and implement effective power and cooling strategies to maintain
optimal data centreenvironmental conditions

CO3 :: apply and configure appropriate network technologies and security controls for a secure
and high-performance data centrenetwork.
CO4 :: analyze and implement comprehensive data centre security measures to protect against
physical, network, and data threats.

CO5 :: evaluate virtualization and containerization technologies to maximize resource utilization

and improve application deployment efficiency.
CO6 :: develop and test a disaster recovery plan and business continuity procedures to minimize
downtime and ensure business operations in the event of disruptions.

Unit I
Introduction to Data Centres : Definition and evolution of data centres., Types of data centres
(enterprise, colocation, cloud)., Key components of a data centre (raised floors, power distribution
units, racks, cooling systems)., Data centre standards and regulations (TIA, TIER, Uptime Institute).
Unit II
Power and Cooling Systems : Power distribution and redundancy strategies (UPS, generators).,
Cooling systems (chilled water, air cooling, liquid immersion)., Thermal management and airflow
optimization, Monitoring and managing power and cooling systems.
Unit III
Network Connectivity : Network architectures and topologies in data centres., LAN and WAN
technologies (Ethernet, Fibre Channel)., Data center fabric architectures., Network security
considerations (firewalls, intrusion detection)., Virtualization of network functions (SDN).
Unit IV
Data Centre Security : Physical security (access control, surveillance)., Network security (firewalls,
intrusion detection/prevention systems)., Data security (encryption, access control)., Disaster
recovery and business continuity planning., Risk management and incident response.
Unit V
Virtualization Technologies : Introduction to virtualization concepts (hypervisors, VMs).,
Virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V, KVM)., Benefits of virtualization in data centres.,
Management and automation of virtual environments., Containerization technologies (Docker,
Kubernetes).
Unit VI
Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity : Importance of disaster recovery planning., Risk
assessment and vulnerability analysis., Disaster recovery plan development and testing., Backup and
recovery strategies (data replication, mirroring)., Business continuity planning and failover
procedures.
