The Ganga - Brahmaputra basin is one of the largest river basins in the world. Lying south of the Himalayas,
it extends approximately 2500 km. between River Satluj in the west and River Brahmaputra in the east. The
two main rivers are Ganga and Brahmaputra. The main tributaries of River Ganga are Yamuna, Ghaghara,
Gomti, Gandak, Kosietc. River Brahmaputra flows through three different countries and is known by different
names. ln Tibet it is called Tsangpo and in Bangladesh it is called Jamuna and Meghna. World's largest and
fastest growing 'delta'called the Sunderbans are found in Ganga-Brahmaputra basin.
The Ganga - Brahmaputra basin enjoys monsoon type of climate. Here the summers are hot and wet
and the winters are cool and dry. The south-west monsoon winds blowing between June and September
bring heavy rainfall. Major area of this basin is a plain while certain areas are mountain. The plains are fertile
and support dense population. The lower mountains are covered with thick tropicaldeciduous forests. Trees
like Teak, Sal and Bamboo are found in the lower mountain region. The delta region has mangrove forests
where Sundari Trees are mainly found. ln the Brahmaputra plain elephants, tigers, dears, monkeys and one
horned Rhinoceroses are found. The delta area is home of the Royal Bengalliger, crocodiles and alligators.
