Tips for Happy Gel Coating

o Verify color with the OEM using the hull id # before ordering
o All boats may need color adjustment prior to application due to age and/or batch variation
o Color adjustment kits are available through Spectrum Color
o Wet sanding and buffing is recommended on older boats prior to making color
adjustments
o Test color on glass before spraying
o Apply wax to a 4x4 piece of tempered glass
o Spray gel coat onto glass
o Allow to cure, apply tape to the back of the sample and remove from glass
o Compare spray out to boat
o Measure everything carefully
o Use plastic or wax lined containers for mixing. Do not use cardboard or other paper
products for mixing – catalyst will be absorbed by paper products
o Catalyze gel coat at 2% by volume in 60-70° F
o Do not attempt in temperatures below 60° F
o Do not go below 1.8% or above 2.8% catalyst regardless of temperature. Over catalyzing
will inhibit a full cure and/or change the color of the gel coat
o Mix catalyzed gel coat thoroughly
o Patch Aid is recommended with all repairs. See directions on Patch Aid for
recommended mixing ratios
o Low VOC gel coats require a Low VOC Patch Aid. Only use the recommended Patch
Aid with the recommended mixing ratios
o Use of any solvent is not recommended. Styrene and especially Acetone will cause color
changes and can affect the cure
o Allow darker colors to cure overnight before sanding and finishing
o Avoid overheating repair when buffing. Overheating may cause color changes
o Avoid taping in squares around repair. Us a diamond or round shape instead. Tape to
corners or color lines to improve blend
o Always use Spectrum Color Products
